DANNY MILLAR R.I.P.
We were all saddened at the sudden passing of Danny early in July. Danny was a very active bowler and club supporter. We will miss his keen sense of humour, the jokes over a beer, his accent and his determination to beat anyone who opposed him on the bowling green. Irene, we grieve with you in your loss. Rest assured we will always be there whenever you need us.

OUR NEW COMMITTEE
We all know how difficult it is to get people to volunteer to stand on committees. The people mentioned below generously volunteered their time and talents to help us this season so let's get behind them. If you disagree with a decision the committee makes you should either bite your tongue or volunteer to go on next year's committee.

Thank you, committee members. We congratulate you and will support you in whatever way we can.

  COACHING LESSONS
WILMA
Wilma is offering coaching lessons on Saturday mornings for those who want to avail themselves of the opportunity. You are very welcome to join Wilma at 9.30 this coming Saturday.

JOHN
For the next 6 weeks I will give coaching lessons on Tuesday mornings (10.00 - 11.00 am) to any person who wants them. If Tuesdays have to be cancelled the coaching will be on Thursday mornings. The first lesson will be next Tuesday September 8th. This will be demand-driven. If no-one turns up I will have a holiday.

The lessons will probably go something like this.
Lesson 1 - grip / green / delivery
Lesson 2 - draw
Lesson 3 - draw to different spots
Lesson 4 - yard on
Lesson 5 - short ends
Lesson 6 - building a head

QUESTION: What do the markings on a bowl stand for?
WB refers to World Bowls Ltd.
R in a circle is a registered design of the World Bowls Ltd.
Initial [eg. N for Henselite] is the code for whom the stamp is issued - a manufacturer/tester.
The number is the year of expiry of the stamp. eg.15 expires on 30-12-2015

What Makes Bowls Turn?
Lawn bowls today are made from a hard plastic called Phenolformaldehyde, they are perfectly round one way and oval shaped the other. The bias is produced by making the bowl lopsided, however it is so minute that it can't be seen with the naked eye. When the bowl is delivered along its running surface, there is sufficient momentum to keep it running straight along its course. As the bowl slows down it attempts to find its true centre of balance, forcing it to curve. The running surface of the bowl is the part of the bowl which is in contact with the green when in motion.

Every bowl has an emblem engraved on each side. One side has a small emblem with the bowl's size, weight, serial number & the manufacturer's stamp around it. The other side has the same emblem, but larger. The small side is the bias side. This means it is the side that it will turn towards when in motion.

Lawn bowl sizes range from size 00 through to size 7. Only 1 to 2 millimetres in diameter separates the sizes of bowls, the differences are small but considerable when gripping various sized bowls.

ETIQUETTE - Bowls Is A Friendly Game
Bowling is a friendly game and all players should show courtesy and good sportsmanship. Acknowledge all good bowls played by either side

THREE CLUBS HAVE NEW WEBSITES
Three local clubs now have their own websites - Bluff Hill, Omarunui and Kia Toa. There are links to each site at the top of the page or you can click here

WEBSITE HITS
It seems our site is gaining in popularity. Last year it had approx 10,700 hits - up from 8,000 the previous year

LILIAN'S GARDEN
My wife would be the first to tell me how unobservant I am ... but ... I did notice the lovely garden Lilian has been caring for outside the club locker rooms - and that's not the only one. Thank you, Lilian, it is beautiful.

DOMINANT DUO
Angela and Mandy Boyd have made the New Zealand Regional Talent Development squad after a summer of blitzing opponents.

EMAILED MINUTES
Our new committee's initiative of emailing the minutes of committee meetings has proved popular. Here is one of a number of positive responses.

Hi John
Fantastic. A good move by Bill, our President. For those of us who have online facility this is most convenient instead of going to the Club Rooms for details on what is going at the Club in the administrative area. Cheers and keep up the good work.
Jack Halka.

THANK YOU JULIE, FAY - AND OTHERS
Most of us would have no idea of the many hours needed to make the Winter bowls Tournament run so smoothly.

Thank you Julie, Fay and the many others who helped us over the winter (greenkeeper, markers, recorders, raffles, etc)

CHRISTMAS BOWLS (copied from Bowls NZ website)
At the 2008 National Club Conference in Wellington, a presentation was made called CASH COWS & GREENER GREENS.  Part of this presentation focused on the concepts of national brands for  HAVE-A-GO days (free open days for the locals) and CHRISTMAS BOWLS  (holding Christmas Staff/Team Parties at the  local bowling club which includes a game of bowls).

We would like to launch these brands this year and provide your club with marketing and promotional support. There is no charge to your club.  The only criteria is you use the logo(s). The aim is to get more people playing bowls , raise our sports’ profile and generate more cash flow for your club! If your club is interested in participating, in this   Depending on the number of clubs that participate there is also the possibility to undertake some national marketing and promotional activity. We look forward to working with you!

Purpose of CHRISTMAS BOWLS: To generate cash-flow for your clubs and introduce new people to the sport of bowls.

Key Aim:  Give them a great time, get their contact details and invite them back to your club to play in MIB or book another function  or . . . . .  what does your club offer, what options do you have for people to play bowls at your club and to generate extra cash flow?
