Lilian Baird R.I.P.
Last Friday (yes - the 13th) dawned bright but no one could have known the sadness the day would eventually bring. Midway through the afternoon we heard Lilian had suffered a massive stroke and it cast a shadow over the whole club. Lilian was one of those people you could not miss. She had a large band of very loyal friends, she always wanted the best for her club and she spoke her mind. She volunteered her time and talents freely. The gardens around our club bear testimony to her gardening skills, she assumed responsibility for seeing we were. kitted out in correct uniform, she was always willing to act as a Marker in Championship Singles, and she served tirelessly on committees. I was impressed with her desire to keep dialogue with anyone who was ill whether it be at home or in hospital. The cards and flowers she sent on our club's behalf brought sunshine to those who needed it most. Our club is the poorer for the loss of Lilian.

Lilian told me several times (in her own quiet way) that she hated having her photo taken so I am really scraping the bottom of the barrel trying to get any photographic record of her.

Women's Junior Championship Singles
Sunny calm conditions greeted the Junior Women when they began their Championship Singles last Saturday. They may not have the experience of many other club members but nobody told them they were inexperienced. They fought hard, played a range of shots and impressed onlookers with the skills they had acquired. When play resumed on Sunday four bowlers remained; Angela Boyd (2 lives) and Nancy Dunnett, Barbara Exeter and Colleen McLaughlin each with one life. Angela beat Colleen and Barbara beat Nancy so that left Barbara and Angela (two-lifer) to play out the final. Those who watched this game were impressed with the high standard of play. Angela eventually won 21-17  Congratulations Angela on another impressive Championship title.

Men's Championship Singles
When this competition continued yesterday two players still had two lives; Lex Parsons and Frank Grantham. One-lifers included Laurie Mclean, Morris Williams, Ross Hamilton, Ray Falvey, Bruce Mitchell, Rolly Hoare and Phil Young. By early afternoon these numbers were down to four; Lex Parsons, Rolly Hoare, Morris Williams and Frank Grantham .... and by the close of play two were left, Morris W and Lex P. Each has one life so they will play the final at a date yet to be announced.

Women's Championship Triples
The result of this game got under my radar. It was played while I was away and I forgot to check when I returned. Congratulations to Fay Johnson, Wanda Guatieri, Shirley Goffin  who beat Wendy Mitchell, Val Ives and Irene Miller for the Championship title.

Question: How can you tell who has possession of the rink?

Law 35           Possession of the Rink
Possession of the rink will belong to the player or team whose bowl is being played. As soon as each bowl has come to rest, allowing time to mark a toucher, possession of the rink will transfer to the opposing player/team. On end changeovers, do not walk in front of the player whose bowl is in motion until it has come to rest, as this player/team still has possession of the rink. The player may give you permission to do so, up until then you are to follow behind them.

Are you a new car or an old car?
If my body were a car, this is the time I would be thinking about trading it is for a newer model. I've got bumps and dents and scratches in my finish and my paint job is getting a little dull. But that's not the worst of it. My headlights are out of focus, my traction is not as graceful as it once was, it takes me hours to reach my maximum speed and my fuel burns inefficiently. But here's the worst of it ..... almost every time I sneeze, cough or splutter either my radiator leaks or my exhaust backfires!

Caps - Visors/Peaks - Polishing Sleeves (2nd reminder)
Some of you may not know there are new bowling caps and visors for sale in our club administration shed as well as polishing sleeves. Both the caps and the visors include Bowls Taradale lettering and club logo. Prices are great.
Caps    $12
Visors   $10
Polishing Sleeve   $3

Hose Out
Please try to remember to put the hose out in the middle of the green after you finish. This will help us to have the very best greens instead of very good greens.
