Newsletter 16  -  04 January 2010

Christmas seems so long ago now but I hope each of you

  had a pleasant Christmas and
 made good New Year resolutions
(possibly broken already)

Enjoy 2010

New Year Resolution
If your New Year resolution is to improve your bowling then this might be just what you need.

Often when we play we come across someone who is unsure of a law, or the correct procedure or bowling etiquette. I consider myself fairly mild-mannered on the bowling green but I had to tell a marker off during the recent Centre Singles because I felt he was doing something he should not have been doing. Whether you are a "newie" or an "oldie" this could be just what you need to improve your bowling. Craig has kindly offered to take two "ETIQUETTE and LAWS" sessions over the next two Saturday mornings (9th, 16th January). Each session will be at our club green and will commence at 10.00 am. Why not come along and join in?

The Nationals
Congratulations to Mandy and Angela Boyd for making Post-Section play in the National Women's Pairs ... and to Mandy for doing likewise in the Women's Singles.

QUOTE

Good friends are like stars.
You don't always see them but you always know they are there.

ETIQUETTE -  Good Bowl
Commend a good bowl of your opponent and of a player in your own team.

COACH - GOAL SETTING
Any athlete without specific performance goals, training goals and practice goals might be going somewhere but is probably going nowhere. Aim at nothing and that is mostly what you get. At best a ship without a rudder.

Here is an example you might like to try.
Objectives:
1. Drawing for position
2. Drawing to off-centre jack
3. Draw/Drive/Draw

The Game:
Mat on the 2m mark

Sequence of play going up and down rink:

Short Jack
1. Draw within half metre of jack

2. Draw to a spot 1 m to the right of the jack
3. Drive right bowl

Med Jack
4. Draw on forehand
5. Draw on backhand
6. Drive a bowl – nominate it first

Jack on edge of ditch
7. Draw to within 1 mat of target

Long Jack
8. Drive bare jack. It must go in the ditch

Question: What are the responsibilities of “seconds” in a game of bowls?

Responsibilities of Seconds (Law 37.3)
The second should:

·         be responsible for the score card

·         enter the names of all players of both teams on the score card;

·         record all shots scored for and against the team as each end is completed;

·         at the end of the game, hand the score card to the skip who should record on it the time that the game finished and then sign it.

If blind people wear glasses, why don’t deaf people wear ear-muff?

Why is it considered necessary to nail down the lid of a coffin?

Why do need an appointment to see a psychic – shouldn’t he know you’re already coming?
