CENTRE
Hawkes Bay First Year Singles
Last Saturday about 20 new bowlers fought out the Men's and Women's First Year Singles on our club greens. Many spectators took the chance to watch, encourage and admire the skills achieved by these new bowlers.

Regional Kittyhawk Qualifying (U20)
What a privilege it was to see so much skilled young talent competing in the Under 20 Kittyhawk bowls yesterday, Sunday. If this is the calibre of our young bowlers coming on then the game is in good hands. Thank you, Wilma, for organising this event. Those who came to watch could not but be impressed with the standard of play among our young folk.

Thank You Markers
Thank you, volunteers, who assisted as markers over the weekend. Your generosity, especially at such short notice, is appreciated.
National Women's Fours - Our girls reached the quarter finals - Well done!
(Bowls NZ - Thur 7th Jan)
Frankton Junction's Sue Burnand and her team of Mandy and Angela Boyd joined by Leanne Curry are in the title race after posting their way through to a quarter final berth beating Mangere's Emma Waerehu 20-14 and Annette Piper from Waikanae Beach 21-16. They will now play the United four consisting of Barbara McGregor, double world champion Val Smith, Dianne Potts and Dale Bourke.

(Bowls NZ - Fri 8th Jan)
Sue Burnand and her team of Mandy and Angela Boyd with Leanne Curry had their title hopes slashed by United's Barbara McGregor, Val Smith, Dianne Potts and Dale Bourke 16-15. McGregor was trailing 15-9 with two ends to play and successfully pulled off the famous Houdini act picking up a four and a three to advance to this years semi final.

Senior Moment
I know anyone can have a senior moment but ...... what would you think of someone (see next article) who asked me to advertise a special "Etiquette & Laws" session last Saturday morning then forgot to turn up until someone phoned to remind him.

The second session will be on again next Saturday.
"He" will be there ... and on time!
Everyone is welcome to attend even if you were not there last Saturday.

New Year Resolution (2ND REMINDER)
If your New Year resolution is to improve your bowling then this might be just what you need.

Often when we play we come across someone who is unsure of a law, or the correct procedure or bowling etiquette. I consider myself fairly mild-mannered on the bowling green but I had to tell a marker off during the recent Centre Singles because I felt he was doing something he should not have been doing. Whether you are a "newie" or an "oldie" this could be just what you need to improve your bowling. Craig has kindly offered to take two "ETIQUETTE and LAWS" sessions over the next two Saturday mornings (9th, 16th January). Each session will be at our club green and will commence at 10.00 am. Why not come along and join in?

Hetero Under 10 years & Over 10 years 2.4.2 (2ND REMINDER)
On Sunday 14th February we are holding a hetero 2.4.2. Dress is mufti and play commences at 10.00 am but this might change to 12.30 pm. Your team must contain one under 10 year player and one who is over 10 years. All entries are being taken by Lois. Please note this is not in our Club booklet but it is in the Centre handbook.

ETIQUETTE -  The Skip is Boss
The person on the head has no right to tell the Skip what to do. He may advise him if the head has been altered after the Skip has left it, but he must not control his play. The Etiquette in this case is to remain silent until the Skip asks for advice.

COACH

PLAYING ON A WINDY DAY
Do not expect to get the same results on windy days as you would hope to achieve on calm days. A bowl that is a metre from the jack in windy conditions will more often than not be in the count. When playing with the wind at an angle to the green play around the clock. Do not have your bowl finishing directly into the wind or finishing with the wind directly behind it. This means that the wind should always be hitting the side of your bowl as it finishes into the head. This has less impact on the slowing bowl compared with the wind hitting its running surface. Remember if you want to understand how to play in windy conditions then get out and practise on windy days.

QUESTION

The responsibilities of directors?
If you are in charge of the head you are called the Director. For instance, in a game of triples, the skip starts off as the Director then when it is the skip’s turn to bowl the No 2 becomes the Director. What are the responsibilities of “directors” in a game of bowls?

Responsibilities of Directors
The Directors shall make every attempt to prevent disturbance of the head by a neutral object, and may stop a neutral Jack or bowl, which is likely to displace the Jack or a bowl. The neutral bowl in course from an adjoining rink shall be replayed provided it was delivered on a bias which would have resulted in it re-entering its own rink. Alternatively, the Directors shall have the option of lifting a bowl at rest upon their own rink which is likely to be disturbed by a neutral bowl in course providing that the lifting will not influence the result of the end. The Directors shall make every attempt to prevent any disturbance of the head by a dead bowl belonging to their rink. The Directors shall mark all Touchers of the team. The Directors shall remove all marks which indicate a Toucher from the bowls of opposing players if those bowls are not Touchers.

WHITES OR MUFTI
Lady bowlers come and go
Dress rules go on forever
How dare you try to make a change
No never, never, never.

The men think we are a joke
and look like mobs of sheep
With madam snapping at our heels
It's to the rules you'll keep.

The young are keen to play the game
But won't of course unless
We put some colour on our frame
And try to change our dress.

The men indeed have got more sense
Their rules are not so stuffy
They have more fun and play the game
you've guessed it; dressed in 'mufti'.
