Friends Day
Glorious weather, heaps of raffles, much hilarity and and a full day's bowling
.... isn't life good!
A very successful day, helped of course by
beautiful weather and a terrific "team". We are so lucky to have such
great help. If it weren't for the Fay's, the
Lois', the Maree's, the Sue's, the Adrienne's etc., where would we be??
Thanks must also go to the behind the scenes workers who get the greens
ready for play. As one of that team said to me on Wed. morning, very
tongue in cheek I might add, " I didn't know I was volunteering for night
shift work". A total of 24 teams, who all seemed to thoroughly enjoy their
day. Thank you to all those members who brought food to enable a very
attractive and enjoyable afternoon tea.
My Thanks. Craig
There were two 4 winners. Peter Thompson, Bill
Edwards, Alex Tonks and Rolly Hoare, Tony Blake, Ken Jordan.
Lucky teams were Sheryl Glock. Karen Grainger,
Judy Richards and Val Ives, Jenny Pritchard, Bev and Les Stuart.

Silly Old Goose Award
I met Julie Haslett in the supermarket on Saturday morning and she told me she was so mortified when she
remembered she had entered a team for Friends Day ..... but then FORGOT TO TURN
UP.
I could tell she was sorry so I said I would not embarrass her with a Turkey Award.
Instead she is the inaugural winner of the "Silly Old Goose"
Award.
Congratulations, Julie!!!

Thanks, Les
Stuart, for the "Friends Day" photos |

Men's Junior Championship Pairs
Several days ago "all the Daves" (Dave Jones & Dave Roberts, Dave Jenkins & Dave Scott)
played the final of the club Men's Junior Championship Pairs.
Congratulations to Dave Jones and Dave Roberts for taking
out the title. From what I heard the final was tightly
fought with neither side conceding anything. I understand one
side changed from long ends to short ones and then managed the shorter ends better - perhaps that made the difference. Well done, men.
Thanks, Jack Budge, for the photo

Open Forum
Bowls HB website
The Bowls Hawke’s Bay Board cordially invites you to attend an Open Forum to
discuss the findings of the recently circulated Questionnaire and to enable
planning for the 2010-2011 season to proceed. The meeting will be held in the
Theatre at Pettigrew Green Arena at 7pm on Monday 19th April.
Please confirm numbers attending to either: Carole Miller 877 7225, Peter Bryant
843 4020, Ces Bell 845 3112
Agenda for your consideration and discussion - we look forward to a constructive
and progressive evening.
- It is proposed that we introduce an
Inter-Club competition commencing from the 2010-2011 season. This competition
will be played over a series of Saturday mornings and will replace the
existing 7’s event.
It is appreciated that this will have a significant impact on the present Club
Programmes, hence the early notice and the need for discussion at both Club
and Centre levels.
- It is proposed that regular Quarterly
meetings be held between the Board, Club Delegates, Umpires, Coaching and
Greenkeepers’ personnel.
- It is proposed that a Greens’ Allocation
Committee be appointed to cover all Centre fixtures.
- It is proposed that consideration be given
to removing time-limit restrictions on all Centre Open Post-section play.
- It is proposed that consideration be given
to running the Men’s Centre Open Fours as a mid-week event.
- It is proposed that out-side assistance be
sought to improve the standard of our greens and to demonstrate the commitment
we have to our local greenkeepers.
- Discussion of Draft Programme.
- It is proposed that an Operations Committee
be appointed, taking effect from the 2011-2012 season. This Operations
Committee would be responsible for the running of all Centre and
Representative events. This Committee would liase with the Umpire, Coaching
and Greenkeepers’ Associations and would report directly to the Board.

Kittyhawk National Under 20's
Four Hawkes Bay bowlers represented Region
3 in Auckland over Easter. To
reach the national finals participants have had to first qualify
at centre and/or regional level. Each of the six regions in New
Zealand has up to four qualifying positions for the men and two
qualifying positions for the women. The balance of the field is
made up of direct entrants from the 2009 event.
Bowls Taradale can feel proud
to have three representatives in the group - Richard Hocking,
Tessa Hocking and Mandy Boyd. The fourth member is Dean Drummond
from Kia Toa.
By my very unofficial reckoning
(at the close of Day 2) Mandy finished 3rd and Tessa 5th equal.
Richard had a larger group to contend with and finished just
below half way. What an outstanding achievement from these three
when you consider they are up against the best Under 20 bowlers
in NZ. Of particular note is Tessa's Day 1 results. At the end
of play on the first day she was leading the field. Well done,
Tessa, Mandy and Richard. We are all so proud of you. |

Semi-final (1) Port Ahuriri defeated Waipawa 15/12 on an extra
end.
Semi-final (2) Kia Toa and Bowls Napier will complete their match on
the morning of April 11th at Bay View, followed by the final between the

COACHING CORNER
Be Selfish - Think of Yourself
All opposition needs to be treated with respect. However whilst respect is
essential, focusing on one’s own performance is the key to success. You have
no control over how well or how poorly the opposition is going to perform.
LEAVE THEM ALONE - play your own game.
Etiquette -
Standing On The Head
Stand at least two metres behind the bowls on the head making sure you do
not kick any bowls accidentally – if so, your opposing player replaces it.
You can indicate with your foot where you want a bowl to finish but remove
your foot as soon as the bowl is greened. Stand still till the players have
delivered their bowls. |
Question: What should happen when it is discovered that the wrong team delivered
the jack?
Law 22 Delivering the jack
If, before a bowl has been played by each team, a player notices that the wrong
team has delivered the jack, the correct team will re-start the end. If, after a
bowl has been played by each team, a player notices that the wrong team has
delivered the jack, play in that end should continue in that order. |
No reason for this photo - I just like it!!! |

New Committee Members Needed
(REMINDER)
Just a reminder that we only
have a few weeks to our AGM (20 June) and we need to be looking at a full
panel of applicants for committee etc. We are desperately in need of a
volunteer for the secretarial position. Irene has done a tremendous job, for
which we are very grateful, but other pressures mean she is unable to carry
on in 2010 -2111, so we need help there. You do NOT
need to have shorthand skills. Neither does it have to be a position for a
female, so come on you folk out there. It's your
club. Take some ownership of it and put something back.
I look forward to your response.

War
affects us in different ways
An elderly Italian went to the village church to make confession for the first
time in many decades.
When the priest slid open the panel in the confessional, the man said, "Father,
Father I have sinned, during World War II, a beautiful woman knocked on my door
and asked me to hide her from the enemy. I hid her in my attic."
The priest replied, "That was a wonderful thing you did my son! You have no need
to confess it."
"It's worse than that, Father," he continued. "She quickly started to repay me
with sexual favours."
The priest said, "People in wartime sometimes act in ways they wouldn't under
normal conditions. If you are truly sorry for your actions, you are forgiven."
"Thank you Father. That's a great load off my mind. May I ask you a question?"
"Certainly, my son?'
"Should I tell her the war is over?" |
