HB CENTRE MIXED 2.4.2 PAIRS
Twelve teams from Bowls Taradale was an impressive entry in the Hawkes Bay Centre's first event of the season. The need to use four greens bore testament to the popularity of this event. At the close of Day 1 (Saturday) the best four from each green formed Division 1, the next four made up Division 2 and the remainder entered a Consolation event.

The following results are unofficial but hopefully accurate.
Names in red belong to Bowls Taradale
Division 1: was won by Malcolm Stockwell & Mary Evans (Napier). Runners up were Graham Fulford and Liffy Law (Havelock North)
Division 2: was won by Paul Sorenson & Vicky Crystal (Napier). Runners up were John McLaughlin and Colleen McLaughlin (yippee!!)
... as I write this Colleen is asleep on the couch "watching" TV !!!
Consolation: was won by Marie Fenton and Mike Geldard. Runners up were Peg O'Dowd and Gary Heathcote

NZ COACH OF THE YEAR

During the week we heard that Wilma Ennor won the Bowls NZ Coach of the Year Award. What an outstanding achievement.
We rejoice with Wilma and congratulate her on winning this award.

BASIC HEAD BUILDING
Building a head is all about
(a) adding to the count
(b) protecting the shot and
(c) retrieving the situation when down

Points to bear in mind

·       Play the easier side

·       Always aim to get both 1st and 2nd shot
If you are holding shot that gives you 2 shots
If you are not holding shot you are only one down

·       When you are holding two shots – protect the head (i.e. anticipate opponent’s shots)

·       If you are not sure what shot to play - draw

·       When playing a yard-on do not lose the bowl if unsuccessful

·       Be up when you are down

·       2 down is bad – but not as bad as 4 down!!!

When holding shot stay wide
When not holding shot keep narrow
Keep the mat the same length when winning – change length if losing
If getting well beaten consider staying on same side as opponent. It gets in their way and you could get 2nd shot

BEHAVIOUR BEHIND THE MAT
Hand your opponent’s bowl to him/her or place it next to the mat. Stand at least 1 metre behind the mat. The bowls should be to the rear and side of the mat. If the bowls are directly behind the mat they can be a danger to those players who step back after delivering a bowl. There should not be too much talking behind the mat – it can disrupt the player’s concentration.

QUESTION
I was playing a game when the opposing skip said to me, “Watch so-and-so, he’s delivering his bowl before the other person’s bowl has come to rest.”  When does possession of the rink transfer to the other team?
Law 35        Possession of the Rink

Possession of the rink will belong to the player or team whose bowl is being played. As soon as each bowl comes to rest, possession of the rink will transfer to the opposing player or team after allowing time for marking a toucher as soon as it comes to rest.

CLUB SECONDARY SCHOOLS SINGLES
Last Tuesday morning in brilliant sunshine sibling rivalry in the Hocking household went up a couple of notches. Tessa and Richard fought out the Secondary Schools Singles title. Under a two-life system the first game was won by Richard and the second by Tessa so that meant one more game had to be played to decide the Singles winner. This was won by Richard.

Those watching were both entertained and impressed by a very high standard of bowling. Congratulations Richard on winning the title. Tessa, you are to commended on being such a worthy opponent. Well done.

PROMINENT HEART SURGEON DIES
A very prestigious heart surgeon died, and was given an elaborate funeral by the hospital he worked for most of his life ... a huge heart ... covered in flowers stood behind the casket during the service as all the doctors from the hospital sat in awe. Following the eulogy, the heart opened, and the casket rolled inside. The heart then closed, sealing the doctor in the beautiful heart forever.

At that point, one of the mourners burst into laughter. When all eyes stared at him, he said, “I am so sorry, I was just thinking of my own funeral... I'm a gynaecologist.”
