BRISBANE FLOODS
You know you are important when reporters meet
you as you come off the plane and want your opinion, advice,
recommendations, etc on world matters (dream on). Anyhow, we
were met by reporters in Wellington but when I told them
our house in Brisbane was too high above the river level to be
affected by the floods my five seconds as a celebrity
vanished. Some Brisbane TV channels carried flood news
24 hours a day and it was hard to believe the suffering and
hardship that many Queenslanders were faced with. |
|
This is a photo taken from our front balcony
looking south towards Brisbane. We were 30 minutes north of the city centre.
The Pine River is in the foreground with a number of trees half submerged. The
suburb of Strathpine is just over the river.
In the distant haze you might just make out some of the buildings in the
centre of Brisbane

There was no bowls information in my email inbox so I was
undecided about this newsletter. However, I have heard about four matters
which have happened since
my last newsletter in mid-December - these are in the
order in which they occurred;
- Congratulation to Tessa Hocking who won the NZ Secondary
Schools Singles in Dunedin
- Congratulations to Mandy Boyd and Angela Boyd who were
part of the team that won the National Women's Fours
- Charlie Demanser, a member of the Taradale Club and a
strong supporter of Bowls Taradale, passed away earlier this week. R.I.P.
- I learned a few minutes ago that Barbara
Exeter and Cheryl Simpson played the final of the Junior Women's Singles
this morning. Congratulations to Barbara for winning with two lives intact.
Well done, Cheryl, for doing so well as a new bowler.

GOAL SETTING
Any athlete without specific performance goals, training goals and
practice goals might be going somewhere but is probably going nowhere.
Aim at nothing and that is mostly what you get.
Here is an example you might like to try.
Objectives:
1. Drawing for position
2. Drawing to off-centre jack
3. Draw/Drive/Draw
Do you
know that Bowls NZ has a number of coaching exercises
that you can try?
The
"Individual Practice" on the right hand side
is
one such example.

own team.
|
QUOTE: Action may not always bring happiness, but there is no happiness
without action.
|
QUESTION:
What are the responsibilities of “seconds” in a game of bowls?
Responsibilities of Seconds (Law 37.3)
The second should:
·
be responsible for the score card
·
enter the names of all players of both teams on the score
card;
·
record all shots scored for and against the team as each end
is completed;
·
at the end of the game, hand the score card to the skip who
should record on it the time that the game finished and then
sign it.

CHILDBIRTH
AT 65
With all the new technology regarding fertility recently, a 65-year-old
friend of mine was able to give birth. When she was discharged from the
hospital and went home, I went to visit.
'May I see the new baby?' I asked.
'Not yet,' She said 'I'll make coffee and you can talk for a while first.'
Thirty minutes had passed, and I asked, 'May I see the new baby now?'
'No, not yet,' She said.
After another few minutes had elapsed,
I asked again, 'May I see the baby now?'
'No, not yet,' replied my friend.
Growing very impatient, I asked, 'Well, when can I see the baby?'
'When he cries!' she told me.
'When he cries?' I demanded. 'Why do I have to wait until he cries?'
'Because I forgot where I put him, O.K.?!!' |
