WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE ON A "FILL-IN" LIST?
Whenever tournaments are played the unexpected can happen where a bowler is unable to compete. Sometimes it is quite difficult for organisers to get a replacement at short notice yet I know there are bowlers out there who would be only too happy to fill in on the odd occasion. If you are such a person would you please put your name on a sheet that has just been put on the club notice board (or email me and I will do it for you).

Events that this might apply to are the regular Friday Triples, the Business House bowls (Thursday evenings) which begins on February 17th, Wednesday Twilight bowls, and so on.

CHAMPIONSHIP MEN'S JUNIOR PAIRS
This event is down to the final. Bryan Godber and Lloyd Fitness will play Les Stuart and Alan Simpson at a date yet to be announced
If you mess with one of us you mess with both I'm sure mine is closer Morris and Ray inspecting the head
CHAMPIONSHIP WOMEN'S SINGLES
This event was originally scheduled for several months ago but had to be postponed.
It will now be held on February 19th
An Entry Form has been posted and anyone wishing to play in this event has to re-enter.
TREMAIN'S OPEN MIXED EARTHQUAKE TRIPLES
Entries are being taken now for the
Tremain's Open Mixed Earthquake Triples.
An entry sheet is on the Notice Board in the Administration Building ... or phone Julie Haslett on 8441253 - this method is preferred
Please do not leave it too late to enter.
FATHER PETER BLAKE R.I.P.
We read in the newspaper during the week of the passing of Father Peter Blake, former Principal of St John's College in Hastings, and brother to Tony. Your bowling mates, Tony, sympathise with you in your loss.

PLAYING ON A WINDY DAY:
Do not expect to get the same results on windy days as you would hope to achieve on calm days. A bowl that is a metre from the jack in windy conditions will often be in the count. When playing with the wind at an angle to the green play around the clock. Do not have your bowl finishing directly into the wind or finishing with the wind directly behind it. This means that the wind should always be hitting the side of your bowl as it finishes into the head. This has less impact on the slowing bowl compared with the wind hitting its running surface. Remember if you want to understand how to play in windy conditions then get out and practise on windy days.

ETIQUETTE: YOUR SKIP IS BOSS
The person on the head has no right to tell the Skip what to do.

He may advise him if the head has been altered after the Skip has left it, but he must not control his play.

The Etiquette in this case is to remain silent until the Skip asks for advice.

  • Commences Thursday 17th February
  • Each Thursday until 31 March
  • 5.30 pm

QUOTE:
It's true that we don't know what we've got until we lose it,
But it's also true that we don't know what we've been missing until it arrives.

QUESTION: If you are in charge of the head you are called the Director. For instance, in a game of triples, the skip starts off as the Director then when it is the skip’s turn to bowl the No 2 becomes the Director. What are the responsibilities of “directors” in a game of bowls?

Responsibilities of Directors
The Directors shall make every attempt to prevent disturbance of the head by a neutral object, and may stop a neutral Jack or bowl, which is likely to displace the Jack or a bowl. The neutral bowl in course from an adjoining rink shall be replayed provided it was delivered on a bias which would have resulted in it re-entering its own rink. Alternatively, the Directors shall have the option of lifting a bowl at rest upon their own rink which is likely to be disturbed by a neutral bowl in course providing that the lifting will not influence the result of the end. The Directors shall make every attempt to prevent any disturbance of the head by a dead bowl belonging to their rink. The Directors shall mark all Touchers of the team. The Directors shall remove all marks which indicate a Toucher from the bowls of opposing players if those bowls are not Touchers.

PROFILE - JEAN SPEAKMAN
I was born in Napier and brought up in Lee Road, Taradale. My Primary education was at Taradale Primary School and then on to Napier Girls’ High School. I left school after my Fifth Form year and worked as a Clerk at the Land and Deeds Office (Land Registry Office) for two years while waiting to do my Nursing training.

In January 1957 I went to Cook Hospital in Gisborne to start my training and sat and passed my finals in Dec. 1959.

In February 1960 John and I were married in St John's Cathedral Napier. We lived in Gisborne for twenty years coming back to Napier in 1977. We have 3 grown up (?) sons, 3 lovely daughters-in-law and 8 grandchildren, (7 boys and 1 girl) and a great granddaughter. I continued my career after marriage and while bringing up our family.

All my life I have been involved in church activities and choirs. My hobbies are singing, leisure marching, spinning, knitting and reading.

When we first came back to Napier we played Indoor Bowls for about 25 years and then changed to Lawn Bowls and find that very rewarding and frustrating!! and also enjoyable (most of the time). It is a “thinking” game and keeps one’s mind active.

I still sing and perform on stage with Tiffanys Variety Club and we also entertain at Rest Homes and anywhere else we are asked to.

GETTING MARRIED
Jack, age 92, and Gill, age 89, living in Auckland, are all excited about their decision to get married. They go for a stroll to discuss the wedding, and on the way they pass a chemist shop and Jack suggests they go in.

Jack addresses the man behind the counter: "Are you the owner?"
The pharmacist answers, "Yes."

Jack: "We're about to get married. Do you sell heart medication?"
Pharmacist: "Of course we do."

Jack: "How about medicine for circulation?"
Pharmacist: "All kinds "

Jack: "Medicine for rheumatism?"
Pharmacist: "Definitely."

Jack: "How about suppositories?"
Pharmacist: "You bet!"

Jack: "Medicine for memory problems, arthritis, and Alzheimer's?"
Pharmacist: "Yes, a large variety. The works.."

Jack: "What about vitamins, sleeping pills, antidotes for Parkinson's disease?"
Pharmacist: "Absolutely.."

Jack: "Everything for heartburn and indigestion?"
Pharmacist: "We sure do..."

Jack: "You sell wheelchairs and walkers and canes?"
Pharmacist: "All speeds and sizes."

Jack: "Adult incontinence pants?"
Pharmacist: "Sure."

Jack: "Then we'd like to use this store for our wedding presents list..."
