TUESDAY'S EARTHQUAKE
As I write this our thoughts are with the people of Canterbury. I have
a sister and two brothers living in Christchurch and Colleen has a
sister there as well. Fortunately all are fine but a little shaken, edgy and
apprehensive.
I suspect many of our bowlers
will find they too have family or friends in Canterbury and will no
doubt be worried by the week's activities.
I trust that your affected family,
relatives and friends are OK and that they are coping with what many
of us hope we will never have to experience.

MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP COLTS SINGLES
- WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP YEAR 1 SINGLES
If ever anyone wanted a lesson in draw bowling all they had to do
was watch our new bowlers in action. Both the women and the men
displayed a level of bowling far superior to the few months they had
been taking part in the sport. Congratulations everyone who
participated. You are a credit both to yourselves and the club.
The Women's Year 1 Final will be played
some time during the week. It will be between Cheryl Simpson and Joy
Carter
The Men's Colts Final was played late
this morning and was a pleasure to watch. Heads were tight and the
drawing brilliant. Congratulations to Lloyd Fitness for winning the
Championship. Dave Henderson must be commended on putting up such a
great fight. |

HAWKES BAY WOMEN'S JUNIOR SINGLES
Barbara Exeter and Cheryl Simpson qualified for
Post-Section play and today they continued that Championship at Bay
View. Cheryl went out in the first round but what a great achievement
for a Year 1 bowler. Barbara reached the semifinals before succumbing
- well done. Unofficially the Championship was won by Louise Bateman
(Bay View).

ALMOST 1000 HITS
PER MONTH
Last month our website had 950 hits.
That's quite impressive - and almost three times as many as the
Mother Club had. One such hit
came from Irene Newbold who now lives in Perth. She sent me an
email and asked to be
remembered to you all.
Hi John
Could you please pass on my congratulations to Barbara - it is so
fantastic and has made my night.
Both Warren and I are working and really enjoying it here in
Perth. I haven't started bowling as there is so much to see and
probably will not join until next year.
Hope both you and Colleen are well and a big 'hi' to everyone.
Regards

COMPUTER
RAFFLE
Most of you will recall the generous offer of Steve at Toast
Computers. He donated a brand new computer to our club and we
decided to raffle it as a fund raiser. That raffle closes soon
- March 2nd - so if you have not yet had a chance to buy a
ticket, or if you wish to get an extra one, you have only
hours
to do so. Check it out at the office.
This is a picture of the new computer that Toast
Computers is
donating to Bowls

I
will have to be more careful with my "etiquette" statements.
Last week's point of etiquette was about avoiding cliques.
When I arrived at bowls last Monday a group of regulars,
who shall remain anonymous for the time being, bailed me up
and had me on.
"Are you talking about us???" they asked
Of course I wasn't .... a clique is a
group that keeps to itself to the exclusion of anyone else.
Anyhow it did prove that the newsletters get noticed.
|
ETIQUETTE -
MOBILE PHONES
Mobile Phones should not be used on or around the green.
... and I don't wish to get bailed up on Monday by everyone
who has a cellphone!

BE PROUD OF YOUR CLUB
Learn the laws of the game and if you want to succeed practise
as often as you can - and include the rolling of the jack.
Be proud of your club and protect it from gossip.
If you disapprove of some action taken by your committee, tell
the committee, not the world.
Support your club's revenue making activities - the benefits
will come back to you.

QUESTION:
Last month our lead delivered the jack and at the same time a
bowl from the next rink came very close to hitting our moving
jack. I asked several people what should happen if their bowl
had come any closer to our jack and I received varying
answers;
(a) stop their bowl (b) stop our jack (c) let them collide
Collision Between Jack And Bowl
If a moving jack and moving bowl are going to collide - you
let them. They are both redelivered
LAW 33.3 Jack displacement by a neutral person or neutral
object
Displacement of a jack in its original course
If a jack in its original course is displaced by a neutral
person or neutral object, it should be re-delivered by the
same player. |

VOLUNTEER(S) NEEDED
I understand one person has put his hand up
to help in this area but several are needed to share and lighten
the load. If you are interested, or just want more information
before deciding, please let Craig know.
With the sad news that in the not too distant future we are losing
both Wendy and Bruce Mitchell as they are moving to Australia to
live, we are also losing a major contributor to the successful
running of our club. Bruce has been our Match Committee Convenor
for several years now and his tireless work to ensure our
programme and championships are run well and to schedule, will be
sorely missed. To this end we, your bowls committee, are asking
for help. This job is not to be put in the "too hard" basket. We
are looking for volunteers to stand up and offer their services to
learn and assist with this position. There are plenty people who
will help to train any candidates. It is a very rewarding job and
certainly not one to be frightened of. If you feel you, or even
better, several of you feel you could work towards helping fill
this role please contact any of your committee members. Remember,
this is your club and will only survive if you are prepared to
pull your weight. |

A
Queensland farmer drove to a neighbours' farmhouse in his Holden ute, and
knocked at the door.
A boy, about 9, opened the door
"Is your Dad home?" said the farmer.
"No mate, he isn't; he went to town."
"Well, is your Mother here?"
"No, she went to town with Dad."
"How about your brother, Howard? Is he here?"
"No mate, he went with Mum and Dad."
The
farmer stood there for a few minutes, shifting from one foot to the other,
and mumbling to himself.
"Is there anything I can do for you? I know where all the tools are, if
you want to borrow one, or I can give dad a message."
"Well," said the farmer uncomfortably, "I really wanted to talk to your
Dad. It's about your brother Howard getting my daughter Susie pregnant".
The boy thought for a moment. "You would have to talk to Dad about that.
I know he charges $500 for the bull and $50 for the pig, but I don't know
how much he charges for Howard." |

I have been "challenged" by a friend who
plays for Wairere to include "his joke" in my next newsletter.
When you read it you will understand how I was a little dubious as to what
graphic I might use with it. |
HALF HOUR LATE
A couple of weeks ago I practised bowling with a new member.
We had fun during the practice so I asked if if he wanted to practise next
week.
He said, "Sure, but I might be half an hour late."
The following week he showed up right on time and we practised - but this
time he played left handed.
I asked him if he wanted to practise again next week but got the same
reply, "Sure, but I might be half an hour late."
I then asked him, "How come at times you play left handed and at other
times you play right handed?"
He replied, "When I wake up in the morning and my wife is sleeping on her
left side I play left handed and if she is on her right side I play right
handed."
I then asked, "So what if she is lying flat on her back?"
He replied, "That's when I'll be half an hour late."
|
When my friend dropped this joke around at
our house he said he would be here at 10.30 am.
He showed up at 11.03 instead!! |
