We extend to Bruce, Wendy and their family our sincere sympathy in their loss.
I understand the funeral will be held next Wednesday.

The Women's Year 1 Final between Cheryl Simpson and Joy Carter will be played tomorrow, Monday, at 4.00 pm.
We wish both players all the best in this important Championship Final.

MEN'S JUNIOR SINGLES ("Final")
Richard Hocking played Alan Frame during the week and won so he and Dave Roberts are now the only two left in the Men's Junior Singles.
Dave has two lives, Richard has one. They will play a "potential final" this coming Thursday at 4.30 pm.

WOMEN'S CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS 12-13 MARCH
All competitors who are taking part in any remaining Women's Club Championships must be available to play 12-13 March.
Play will commence at 8.30 am on Saturday

Singles - will be played on Saturday
Pairs - will be played on Sunday morning
Triples - will be played on Sunday afternoon

HAWKES BAY JUNIOR MEN'S AND 1st YEAR SINGLES
HB's newest bowlers should have been on show all this weekend at Bowls Taradale but no one told the weather man.

Five of our Juniors competed in the Junior Singles on Saturday and making Post-Section play are Richard Hocking, D Roberts and B Gardner.

We also have six entrants in the Year 1 Singles - what a great testament to the health of our club. Our players are D Henderson, A Simpson, L Fitness, B Morton, A Buckley and A Frame.

Unofficially - some of these games might be played during the week ... and perhaps next Sunday ... but nothing has been decided. Keep an eye on the notice board down at the bowling club.

WOMEN'S WINSTANLEY CLASSIC FOURS
This was played yesterday at Bowls Napier - today's play cancelled
Unofficially - Olga Taylor's Napier team won

Wilma with her new bowlers Terry - enjoying the exercise Has anyone noticed how Jim talks to his bowls?
PRESIDENT'S CHARITY HETERO TRIPLES
Presidents Charity Hetero Triples took place last Friday. Two full greens was testimony to the popularity of this event. As you might expect the charity chosen was the Christchurch earthquake appeal - $385 was raised. Thank you Lois, Fay and all the others who helped make the day such an enjoyable and successful occasion.

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS
If you look at the HB Centre programme (RH column just below this message) you can see the Champion of Champions (C of C) events begin soon. For the benefit of new bowlers this is where the Championship winners of each club play each other to see who is the overall champion in Hawkes Bay.

RISE IN ANNUAL SUBS
In response to the comments directed at committee for the increase in 2011/12 bowls subs we would like to try to clarify the rationale behind our decision. We accept and apologise for the manner in which our decision was/was not conveyed to you all. A letter accompanying your annual account would have been much more appropriate.

1. Members were advised quite clearly at the A.G.M. in June 2010 that while we were able to maintain the subs at their present level for 2010/11 season there would be an increase next year.

2. In previous years the Bowls adjunct submitted a budget to the "Mother" Club, which effectively covered a lot of the maintenance cost associated with the day to day management of the greens. Given the "Mother" Club's financial situation currently, it is patently obvious that we, the bowls adjunct, are not going to get any financial assistance in ongoing green maintenance, let alone green replacement from them. The survival of our facility is going to be totally our responsibility. The viability of us maintaining the current reputation of "the best greens in H.Bay" is going to require very careful management and stewardship to ensure we can survive.

3. We have been advised that Capitation fees are increasing to approx $60 in the near future.

4. We are still far and away the cheapest of any major bowling club in H. Bay.

5. If we had delayed notification of this increase until after the next A.G.M. it would have meant that the increase would not be able to be implemented until subs were due for the 2012/13 season.

Your committee is not out to make money, but it definitely is trying to ensure you have the best facility available within the budget we have.

Hopefully this explanation will explain the reasoning behind our decision.

Your Bowls Taradale Committee

SOME PEOPLE ARE HARD TO PLEASE

One year, I decided to buy my mother-in-law a cemetery plot as a Christmas gift.
The next year, I didn't buy her a gift.
When she asked me why, I replied, "Well, you still haven't used the gift I bought you last year!"

And that's how the fight started.....

COMPUTER RAFFLE
Most of you will recall the generous offer of Steve Pearce at Toast Computers.
He donated a brand new computer to our club and our committee decided to raffle it as a fund raiser.
Steve was here in person on Friday afternoon to present the computer to the winner RON SINGLE - Ticket No. 186
Thank you everyone who bought a ticket or promoted this raffle.
A special thank you to Steve Pearce for making it all possible.

THANK YOU "RECARPETEERS"
At last week's committee meeting it was recognised and acknowledged the tremendous work carried out by Michael Graham, Allen Boardman and their band of volunteers to recarpet the walkways and permanent rink markers around A green. This was a huge task, which, in the greater scheme of things, will save untold hours of repeat marking that we have to do every second or third year since the greens were first put down. We, as members, thank you sincerely for a big job well done. (Craig)

Allen Boardman approached me personally during the week and wanted to add his personal thanks to those who gave time and skills so generously. He did appreciate all the effort that each person made.

PAY ME A COMPLIMENT

My wife was standing nude, looking in the bedroom mirror.
She was not happy with what she saw and said to me, "I feel horrible; I look old, fat and ugly.
I really need you to pay me a compliment.'
I replied, "Your eyesight's damn near perfect."

And that's how the fight started.....

Men's Colts and Year 1 Women in action I've got four bowls here ...
I have to leave one out ... but which one?
Wim and Bruce

ETIQUETTE - AT THE CLOSE OF PLAY
Bowls is a friendly game and all players should show sportsmanship and remember courtesy costs nothing. When the game is over shake hands, be friendly and congratulate the winner. All players should assist in returning mats, jacks and scoreboards at the close of play.

COACHING TIP - BE SELFISH
All opposition needs to be treated with respect.
However whilst respect is essential, focusing on one’s own performance is the key to success.
You have no control over how well or how poorly the opposition is going to perform.

LEAVE THEM ALONE - play your own game.

FROM ZERO TO 150 IN 3 SECONDS
My wife was hinting about what she wanted for our upcoming anniversary.
She said, "I want something shiny that goes from 0 to 150 in about 3 seconds."
I bought her a bathroom scale.

And that's how the fight started.....

QUESTION: During a game of pairs (2.4.2) one of the players forgot to play his 4th bowl. He walked down the other end of the rink and waited for his partner to play the last two bowls. Each team then delivered one bowl before the spare 4th bowl was discovered. What should now happen? Can the bowl still be played or is the shot forfeited?

LAW 47.4       Failing to play
If a bowl has been played by each team before the players discover that one of them has failed to play a bowl in the proper order, that player will lose the right to play the bowl.

If the result of an end has been agreed or the process of deciding the number of shots scored has started, a player who has failed to play a bowl will lose the right to play the bowl.

An airliner developed engine trouble and the airhostess has the job to get every one to jump with their parachutes.

All the crew and all the passengers but one have gone. He keeps stepping up to the door, and nervously stepping back.

The airhostess, wants to go too, while there is time, but can't go till all the passengers have jumped.

She says, "Look sir, I will show you exactly what to do, but just remember, when you jump, count to ten, then pull your ripcord, that will open your parachute."

So she does a textbook jump, counts to ten, pulls her ripcord, her parachute opens, and she slowly descends.

But after a while, she wonders what happened to the passenger.

She gets quite worried, after all he was her responsibility.

She looks around, but can't see him anywhere.

All of a sudden, he goes streaking past her, and all she can hear is
