TARADALE WOMEN'S
GALA
I'm not an expert on Women's Galas but they can't come much better
than the one our ladies put on this week. Success
doesn't just happen - careful planning and hard work by many
people is needed, so too is a large attendance ... calm
sunny weather helps.
CONGRATULATIONS TO
EVERYONE WHO HELPED MAKE IT HAPPEN
CRAIG WRITES:
Wow!!!!!!!!!!
What an effort.
There's still a bit of tidying up to do, but I have to say on behalf
of your committee, that we owe a huge vote of thanks and an even
bigger bouquet of congratulations to our organizing group for the
incredible success of our second ladies gala.
WAIT FOR IT
A preliminary figure of $2718
This is subject to confirmation, but indications are that it is more
likely to increase rather than decrease.
As you all know, this is a team effort.
What a team.
As Club Captain it never fails to humble me that without all your help
and support we would slip down the ever threatening slope so many
other organizations such as ours are facing. The sight on Tuesday and
Wednesday last week of so many members offering their help and
"skills" ??? in ensuring the day went off well, was exciting. Farmer
Fletcher, "Little Blossom" Sherrill Taylor and President Pete in their
resplendent outfits added heaps to the atmosphere, as did the Sureline
Barbershop quartet, a neat touch.
I must also thank so many of our men members for their contribution to
the more physical aspects of a day such as this. There are so many
people to thank it becomes dangerous to single out individuals.
Suffice it to say that without Sue and Maree's controlling skills this
day would not have happened.
Please accept this as my personal acknowledgement to you all.

EAST
COAST CHARTERED CLUBS
Please presume nothing....
It was not until Thursday afternoon that I heard that a Bowls Taradale
team
won the East Coast Chartered Clubs tournament in Wairoa last week.
Congratulations to Peter Turnbull, Clark Nicol, Graham Weber and Chris
Angove.
WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP YEAR 1 SINGLES
FINAL
The Women's Year 1 Final between Cheryl Simpson and Joy Carter was
played earlier in the week - and what a contest. Joy was ahead going
in to the last end but Cheryl would not lie down. She played three
magnificent bowls right at the finish to close out
the game. Congratulations Cheryl on taking the Championship. Well done, Joy
for going so close. |
SATURDAY'S CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS
Two finals were decided on Saturday - Men's Junior Singles and the
Women's Singles
-
MEN'S JUNIOR SINGLES - was won by Dave Roberts
21/19 after a two hour struggle. Congratulations Dave on winning the Championship.
Both Dave and Richard Hocking are to be commended on their play.
-
WOMEN'S SINGLES - Marie Fenton and Sue Brock were the first two to
succumb. The final of this Championship event was between Angela Boyd and Sheryl
Glock. Angela
got away to an early lead but then Sheryl began to find her length and
came back into it. Angela then had another spurt and finished up
winning with her two lives intact. Congratulations Angela on a well-deserved title.

|
WOMEN'S PAIRS - the semifinal was between Barbara
Exeter/Sheryl Glock and Sue Brock/Maree Turner. Barbara and Sheryl won
this game so they played Colleen McLaughlin and Del Girven in the
final. Sunny weather and consistent draw bowling was on show from both
teams. Colleen and Del got off to an early start and stayed there
eventually winning by two points. Congratulations Colleen and Del.
(plus a silent whoopee from me!!) |
WOMEN'S TRIPLES - in this event
Angela Boyd, Sheryl Glock and Barbara Exeter
(two lives) played (one-lifer)
Sue Brock, Lynda Boyd and Jean Speakman. Angela's team really clicked in this
game and they won comfortably with both lives intact.
Congratulations Angela, Sheryl and Barbara. |
MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP PAIRS - Gary Heathcote and
Alan Ferrick played Ross Hamilton and Jack Philip in this final. Ross and Jack played consistently and deserved their win in
this event. Congratulations Ross and Jack on winning the title.

HAWKES BAY JUNIOR MEN'S AND 1st YEAR SINGLES
Today saw the continuation of play in the HB Junior Men's
Singles. The following reached
Post-Section play; Richard Hocking, D Roberts and B Gardner.
The final was played between Richard Hocking and Ben Sail (Bay
View). Ben won but not before Richard displayed a host of
bowling skills that most bowlers would be proud to own. Well
done Richard. Your club is so proud of you.
The HB Men's
Year 1 Singles did not start last week because of the weather
so entering this competition for the first time were D
Henderson, A Simpson, B Godber, B Morton, A Buckley and A
Frame. Unfortunately L Fitness was out of town so unavailable. Each player in this event played four one hour
games. Unofficially M Barry (4/4 games) won with our Dave
Henderson (3/4 games) coming second. Well done, Dave, for
going further than most. All those who took part must have
enjoyed the day and gained immensely from the competition.

DEATH NOTICES
Gallagher opened the morning newspaper and was dumbfounded to
read in the obituary column that he had died.
He quickly phoned his best friend, Finney.
'Did you see the paper?' asked Gallagher. 'They say I died!!'
'Yes, I saw it!' replied Finney.
'Where are ye callin'
from?' |

HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT
UMPIRING?
Seeing we have such an enthusiastic membership and also so
many newer bowlers it is appropriate that we ensure we give
everyone the opportunity to extend/expand their knowledge of
the game.
The Umpires association is
starting a new course for both laws and measuring on the 19th
March at Bowls Napier.
There seems to be a
misunderstanding that you need to be a bowler of many years
experience to qualify for further knowledge. Not so. I would
recommend to all members that they give some serious thought
to attending as it is most interesting and rewarding. For further information ring
Frank Hosegood on 844 4075

ETIQUETTE -
REMEMBER THE GREENKEEPER
Greenkeepers put in many hours so that we can play bowls on a
good surface and amid pleasant surroundings. Take time to
thank them on the work they have done and remember … bowls
should not be dropped on the green.
|
COACHING TIP -
ANOTHER PAIR OF EYES CAN HELP |
All bowlers, irrespective of their skills level, should get
their coach to look at their bowling action at least once or
twice a year.
It is not unusual for small faults to creep into your
technique and thus reduce the percentage of successful shots.
Good coaches will not apply major surgery but will help you to
get rid of the problem.
You will generally find the winner of a game is the one who
does the basics best. |

BRUCE MITCHELL
SAYS "THANKS"
Bruce has asked me to convey his appreciation and thanks to
his friends at Bowls Taradale.
He would like to thank all those who stood in for him while he
was away and to thank the players for their cooperation.
He would also like to thank each individual who expressed
sympathy or who sent messages and cards in the recent passing
of his son-in-law.
Your care, support and interest is appreciated by Bruce and
Wendy. |

QUESTION
Something unusual happened in a game our Fours were playing.
The lead, the No 2 and No 3 had each delivered their bowls so
it was time for the skips to play. Our skip’s first bowl
struck the jack and it moved towards the right hand side of
the rink. The remaining bowls were played then scoring began.
When we were checking the head someone said, “I think the jack
is out.” Both skips rechecked and agreed the jack was just
outside the side boundary of the rink. What should now happen?
Do you ignore the last few bowls? Does the result stand
because both teams played at least one bowl after the jack
moved? Is the end dead? Should you refer both skips to an
optician?
Law 30 Dead jack
If the jack is moved by a bowl in play, it is a dead jack if
it passes completely outside a side boundary of the rink of
play. The skips should decide whether a jack is dead or not as
soon as they realise it is necessary. If the players do not
realise that a decision is necessary as soon as the jack comes
to rest, the decision can still be made even if a number of
bowls have been played after the jack came to rest. |

Wisdom
doesn't automatically come with old age.
Nothing does - except wrinkles.
It's true, some wines improve with age.
But only if the grapes were good in the first place. |

WHAT'S ON TV?
My wife sat down next to me as I was flipping channels.
She asked, "What's on TV?"
I said, "Dust."
And then the fight started...

A group of girlfriends, all age 40, discussed
where they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that
they would meet at Shed 2 because the waiters
there had tight pants and nice backsides.
10 years later, at age 50, the friends once again discussed
where they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that
they would meet at Shed 2 because the food was
good and the wine selection was excellent.
10 years later, at age 60, the friends again discussed where
they should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they
would meet at Shed 2 because they could dine in
peace and quiet and the restaurant had a beautiful view of the
inner harbour.
20 years later, at age 80, the friends discussed where they
should meet for lunch. Finally it was agreed that they would
meet at Shed 2 because the restaurant was
wheelchair accessible.
10 years later, at 90 years of age, the friends again
discussed where they should meet for lunch.
Finally it was
agreed that they would meet at Shed 2 because
they had never been there before. |
