RESULTS
By my reckoning all the Championships have now been played. Here is my list of winners plus runners-up. Please check them and let me know if there are any mistakes or omissions. If you want to see who won these events in years gone by you can click the results link above. Results on the website go back to 2002-2003 when I first set the site up. If you want to go back any further ask a geriatric older than me (or cast your eyes over the Honours Board in the Mother Club).

LAWS OF BOWLS - NEW EDITION
If you would like to see the NEW LAWS regarding our sport click here (then bookmark, or save, the site)
I had mentioned in an earlier newsletter there were two new laws in particular that might affect some players
  • OPTION TO GIVE MAT AND JACK AWAY (Law 18.4) this option will no longer be available. The winner of an end will have to play first in the following end.
  • SCORE CARD. AND DUTIES OF A SKIP (Law 37) The Skip will now keep the score card in all disciplines.

The new Laws which were approved by World Bowls will come into effect in New Zealand on 1st April 2011.
Click here to see a summary (10 items) of the main changes to the Laws

HOSED OFF
Once again we are back to the old bad habits. Three times this last week the last players to leave the greens have not put the hoses out. You are the first ones to complain to me about the sand and any associated problems that arise. If there is someone still on the greens when you leave please just give them a reminder. A lot of our newer bowlers are possibly not aware of how important our watering programme is, not only to the present bowling conditions, but also the longevity of our greens. We need your cooperation.
Thanks. Craig

COACHING TIP - SETTING GOALS
Goal setting can be a powerful process in helping you improve your bowls.
The following mnemonic (SMART) might help you set effective goals.

S

Specific

I want to draw 2 consecutive bowls close to the jack

M

Measurable

Both bowls must finish less than 1 metre from the jack

A

Attainable

Keep goals simple and within your reach

R

Relevant

I want to be a better lead bowler for my team

T

Time-bound

Complete within the next fortnight

FRIENDS DAY - MARCH 30th
I hope you are all making an effort to make this a good fun outing. We do need entries as we have arranged something pretty special for you this year.  Remember this is a day for total relaxation and is also an opportunity to invite some of your bowling  friends that you already have or have met through the year. We do ask you to try to bring friends from other clubs, but if you can't manage that, or if you're like me and haven't got any, then grab whoever you can. It's hetero triples, whites, starting at 10:00 am with no entry fee and this year we are providing you with lunch, we have attracted a large N.Z. company who are doing a special promotion.

We would appreciate you making an effort to make this a good fun day.
Entries to Julie Haslett on 844 1253
Many thanks
Craig

ETIQUETTE - DON’T SIT ON THE EDGES
If at any time you feel like sitting down DO NOT sit on the bank as this is the official playing field.

QUESTION - If you are playing in a competition in which both scorecards and scoreboards are being used who does the board and who keeps the card?

Law 37.3        Scoreboard v Scorecard
If a scoreboard is used as well as a score card, the second of the team which won the toss for opening play should update the scoreboard and the opposing SKIP should deal with the score card.

One way which might help you to remember is to think of the girl's name "Elsie" (or LC)   L=loser C=Card

SCORE CARD. AND DUTIES OF A SKIP (Law 37)
(As of April 2011) The Skip will now keep the score card in all disciplines.

CARD CLUB - MONDAY NIGHTS
We are unable to Lawn Bowl in the dark unless of course you have extremely good night vision, so why not come to the Taradale Club for a fun evening, playing cards??? Four members attended the inaugural Card Club on Monday Evening and had 3 games of 500. They were Les Stuart, Carol Young, Graham and Cherrille Ede.

Les and Carol were the night’s winners, sadly Graham and Cherrille missed out on the night, but a lot of fun was had and the company was very pleasant indeed. It’s a relaxing way to get away from the ‘GOGGLE BOX’, meet new people and enjoy the company of like minded people.

The Card evening has begun, the nights are drawing in, so why not come along to the Taradale Club at 7 o’clock on a Monday evening and have a game or two of cards and get the old brain box back into working order again. We not only play 500, but Eucha, Cribbage and as the membership grows add more card games, (Other than Bridge, as this club already exists).

THE POWER OF THE HUMBLE WEED EATER
Two guys, Larry and Doug, are sitting at their favourite bar drinking beer. Larry turns to Doug and says, 'You know, I'm tired of going through life without an education. Tomorrow I think I'll go to the Community College and sign up for some classes.'

Doug thinks it's a good idea and the two leave.

The next day, Larry goes down to the college and meets Dean of Admissions, who signs him up for the four basic classes: Maths, English, History, and Logic.

'Logic?' Larry says. 'What's that?'

The dean says, 'I'll give you an example. Do you own a weed eater?'

'Yeah.'

'Then logically speaking, because you own a weed eater, I think that you would have a yard.'

'That's true, I do have a yard.'

'I'm not done,' the dean says. 'Because you have a yard, I think logically that you would have a house.'

'Yes, I do have a house.'

'And because you have a house, I think that you might logically have a family.'

'Yes, I have a family.'

'I'm not done yet. Because you have a family, then logically you must have a wife. And because you have a wife, then logic tells me you must be a heterosexual.'

'I am a heterosexual. That's amazing! You were able to find out all of that because I have a weed eater.'

Excited to take the class now, Larry shakes the Dean's hand and leaves to go meet Doug at the bar. He tells Doug about his classes, how he is signed up for MathS, English, History, and Logic.

'Logic?' Doug says, 'What's that?'

Larry says, 'I'll give you an example. Do you have a weed eater?'

'No.'

'Then you're gay.'
