PROFILES
I like to think we are a family and can share things with each other. Last year we began a "profiles" page (see link above) in which people were invited to write a short life history. Club members enjoyed reading the stories and the remarks which reached me were very positive. It is not always easy to write about yourself and some are not comfortable doing so and that must be respected. However if you are willing to add your "life story" to those already on the website please feel very welcome. Send me some notes and if you want any photos scanned I can do that for you. If you are unable to do it just now but would interested at a later date let me know.

I don't enjoy pushing people to do this sort of thing so it is up to you. Challenge yourself!!

NO ROOM
Last Tuesday morning I went down to the club to have some practice .... and both greens were FULL except for one spare rink. What a nice problem for any club. Vickie McNamara was coaching a group of bowlers, Wilma Ennor was coaching some of our newer members, others were doing Gardner Shield exercises and some were simply having a practice on their own. Aren't we lucky!!!!

TEACHER: If I had seven oranges in one hand and eight oranges in the other, what would I have?
BILLY: Big hands!

I have combined our Club programme with the Centre programme in a table of two columns. In the left hand side I have copied the Bowls Taradale Summer Programme. The right hand column contains the Centre Programme. I have broken up the data into monthly segments.

If you are interested you can click HERE and print off a copy.

TEACHER: Why are you late?

WEBSTER: Because of the sign.

TEACHER: What sign?

WEBSTER: The one that says, "School Ahead, Go Slow."

BOWL SIZE
The bowls I use are size 4 and they have the letters XH next to the number 4.
Do you know what “XH” stands for?
There are two bowl sizes smaller than size 1. Do you know what they are called?
What is the largest bowl size?

XH means “extra heavy”
Sizes are: 00, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7

Bowls range in size from size 00 (smallest) to size 7, and there will be a size that is correct for your hand.  It is very important that a bowls fits snugly within the palm of your hand using your preferred grip. They can be either medium or heavy in weight, they can be regular or slim in their diameter.  All of these variables combine to make your choice of bowl crucial to your future success.

Bowls here show the older 6 sided BB stamp
and the newer oval rugby football shape
signifying the new testing rules
introduced 1/04/2002.

CORRECTION TO THE NEW HANDBOOK
Chris Downing's phone number is incorrect in the Handbook
It should be 8437532

GIVING THE MAT AWAY
(courtesy of Vickie)
Since the change of the law, people have been getting confused as to whether they can give the mat away at any time or not.

You can give the mat away
     *  on the first end, or
     *  if extra ends are played, and there is a toss, it can be given away on the first end again.

If you toss prior to trial ends, this also applies to trial ends, as to who has the mat on first trial end.
If it is given away by the winner of the toss, the opposition cannot refuse to take it.

Law 18.2 Tossing for Opening Play; Law 18.2.2, sub sections 18.2.2.1 or 18.2.2.2, Law 18.2, sub 18.2.4. Then you go onto Law 18.4.

There is a link to the laws of bowls on our home page if ever you want to check them - or click here.

ANYONE CAN MAKE A MISTAKE
A Minnesota couple decided to holiday in Florida during the winter. They planned to stay at the very same hotel where they spent their honeymoon 20 years earlier. Because of hectic schedules, it was difficult to coordinate their travel schedules. So, the husband left Minnesota and flew to Florida on Thursday. His wife would fly down the following day.

The husband checked into the hotel. There was a computer in his room, so he decided to send an e-mail to his wife. However, he accidentally left out one letter in her e-mail address, and without realizing his error, he sent the e-mail.

Meanwhile.....somewhere in Houston, a widow had just returned home from her husband's funeral. He was a minister of many years who was called home to glory following a sudden heart attack. The widow decided to check her e-mail, expecting messages from relatives and friends. After reading the first message, she fainted.

The widow's son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor, and saw the computer screen which read:

To: My Loving Wife
Subject: I've Arrived
Date: 16 August

I know you're surprised to hear from me. They have computers here now and you are allowed to send e-mails to your loved ones. I've just arrived and have been checked in. I see that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you then! Hope your journey is not as uneventful as mine was.

P.S. Sure is hot down here!
