ANGELA IN TWO FINALS, MANDY IN THREE, AT NATIONAL OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
What an achievement!
Last week we heard about Mandy and Angela in the Finals of the Singles and Pairs - this week it was the Women's Fours.

Mandy, Angela, Sue Burnand and Leanne Curry reached the finals of the Fours but went under by a narrow margin (18-16).
Congratulations on such an outstanding effort.

WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES
Some time ago Angela Boyd, two lives, and Sheryl Glock played a potential singles final. The score was locked on 11-11 when rain stopped play. This game continued today, Sunday, and Sheryl won a closely fought game 21-20. That meant they had to turn around and play again. This time the decision was more definite. Congratulations Angela on becoming our new Women's Singles Championship winner. Well done, Sheryl, on getting further than most.
BRYAN AND LLOYD 2nd IN TONG CUP
Bad weather last weekend disrupted the running of the Tong Cup. What was meant to be a two day competition was squeezed into one day. At the close of Day 1 only two teams had four wins - Kia Toa and Taradale. When ends, points, etc were taken into consideration our team just missed out. Congratulations to Bryan Godber and Lloyd Fitness on coming 2nd.

INTERCLUB SEVENS AND TRIPLES
This competition closed yesterday but I have no results to report

COACHING TIP

PRE-SHOT ROUTINE
Lawn Bowls may best be described as a low intensity long endurance sport. Therefore the ability to maintain focus or concentration over a period of time is a skill that needs to be included in training programmes.

A pre shot routine could be:

1.    Define the shot you are going to play (draw, yard-on, drive, etc).

2.    Place the bowl in the hand correctly.

3.    Establish the intended line.

4.    Move onto the mat ensuring the anchor foot and body is pointing directly along the intended line.

5.    Think calm and relaxed.

6.    Put the feeling into your body of how fast you need to bowl the bowl.

7.    Concentrate and deliver the bowl.

8.    Analyse the result and what correction if any will be required with the next bowl.

QUESTION: During a competition at a local Bowling Club a bowl from the neighbouring rink was heading for our jack. The person on our head lifted the jack and let the bowl pass through. She said, “I am allowed to do this.”  Was she right?

Law 33.6  Jack displacement by a bowl from a neighbouring rink
If a jack at rest on the rink is in danger of being moved by a bowl from a neighbouring rink, any player at the head or the marker should stop the bowl. If the bowl was in its original course and was delivered on a bias that would have taken it back into its own rink, it should be replayed.

Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time

Because then you won't have a leg to stand on.

ETIQUETTE TIP

DON’T LOOK FOR EXCUSES
Excuses for bad play by bowlers should not be made.

Good bowlers play poor games occasionally.

When beaten, they do not blame the condition of the green, the wind, or anything else - their victors had the same conditions to contend with.

It is bad form to bewail one's luck - generally the better bowler has the better luck.

THE PORTRAIT
An elderly woman decided to have her portrait painted. She told the artist, "Paint me with diamond earrings, a diamond necklace, emerald bracelets, a ruby broach, and a gold Rolex."

"But you are not wearing any of those things," replied the artist.

"I know," she said. "It's in case I should die before my husband. I'm sure he will remarry right away, and I want his new wife to go crazy looking for the jewellery."

THANK YOU JOHN CALNAN
Some of you might have noticed the sterling work John Calnan is doing on the bench-type seats around the greens. The wooden slats on many have deteriorated to such a state that they have to be replaced. John has taken on the task of repairing these seats. Thank you, John.

THANK YOU PETER FLETCHER
Have you noticed how clean the boundary fence edges are? Peter Fletcher has made a huge difference to the edging of the fence behind the HBS Bank green. Thank you, Peter

DID YOU KNOW?
The only road connecting Gibraltar to Spain shuts down every time a plane lands. Winston Churchill Avenue, the only road that connects Gibraltar to Spain, happens to intersect with the Gibraltar Airport runway. Movable barricades close when an airplane lands or takes off and shuts down the road each time.
If the grass is greener on the other side,
maybe that’s because
you’re not taking good care of your grass

TAURANGA WOMEN'S 46th ANNUAL FOURS TOURNAMENT

TURKEY AWARD
What would you think of a person who put diesel into a vehicle that takes only petrol.
One of our members did that this week but I told him his secret is safe with me.
I would never mention his name

Mandy and Angela
(Bowls NZ website)
Looking to defend the title they earned on Dunedin greens last year, SLAM (Sue Burnand, Leanne Curry, Angela Boyd and Mandy Boyd) came a long way towards taking it away again at this year's Hyundai National Open Championships.

However, national titleholder Carole Fredrick came better prepared for the final outing, skipping her Birkenhead fours side onto the podium in the final end to win 18-16.

Disappointingly for Mandy Boyd (Johnsonville), the loss is her third final defeat in less than a week. The 20-year-old bowling star admitted she would have liked to take home a national title to add to last year's trophy, but felt they played well and were simply out-bowled by the Birkenhead fours side.

It was by no means a failed campaign for the NZ squad member, though. Boyd won the trophy for most consistent bowler at the event, and having made it into all three of the women's finals this year she has certainly proven her abilities on the green.

All of which will be looked on kindly by national selectors when they consider which elite players to include in the line up for this year's World Bowls Championships in Adelaide, Australia.

Expanded Junior Trans-Tasman Squad Announced
(Bowls NZ website)
A mutual agreement between Bowls NZ and Bowls Australia will see the Junior Trans-Tasman squad extended this year to include older bowlers in what was the under-25 team. The change of rules allows two players that are over 25-years-old to be included in both the men's and women's sides.

New to the national squad, White will be in good company as she rolls up alongside triple national title finalist Mandy Boyd (Johnsonville), 2011 Junior World Cup winner Clare McCaul (Silverstream), Trans-Tasman veteran Amy Brenton (Stoke) and Talent Development squad member Angela Boyd (Taradale). Angela also made this year's finals at Hyundai National Open Championships in the pairs and fours with sister Mandy.

The Under-25 Junior Development Trans-Tasman Tournament will be held from March 7-9, 2012, at the Waihopai Bowling Club in Invercargill.

NOW THAT'S SMART
Barbara Walters, formerly of 20/20, did a story on gender roles in Kabul, Afghanistan, several years before the Afghan conflict. She noted that women customarily walked five paces behind their husbands.

She recently returned to Kabul and observed that women still walk behind their husbands. Despite the overthrow of the oppressive Taliban regime, the women are happy to maintain the old custom.

Ms. Walters approached one of the Afghani women and asked, 'Why do you now seem happy with an old custom that you once tried so desperately to change?'

The woman looked Ms. Walters straight in the eyes, and without hesitation said, 'Land Mines.'

Moral of the story is: no matter what language you speak or where you go - Behind Every Man, There's A Smart Woman!
