Newsletter No 1 -
August 31 2010 |
It has been
a few
months since I last posted a newsletter. Winter was
wet and cold (what did you expect) but when you see what other parts
of NZ have to put up with we really do live in the best part of the
country.
We were sad to hear of
the passing of Sylvia Rowe, Bob Mason and (ex-member) John Blackwell. All gave much to our club and we are
grateful for the time they were with us. Mandy and Tessa are to be
congratulated on their selection to an Auckland Invitation team which
competed against a Queensland Under 18 team. We rejoiced with and
congratulated Maureen
and Eddie Parsons. Not too many reach their
50th Wedding anniversary so their achievement was both special and
significant
- and should be recognised. The
newspaper
commendations offered to Tessa, Richard, Malia and Wilma were well
deserved. The news that Mandy (Young Player of the Year) and
Wilma (Coach of the Year) were finalists in their respective
categories was great news and a fitting testament to their skill, hard
work and dedication. Finally Phil and Sheryl are to be commended on
using their initiative in setting up a highly successful 2.4.2 mixed
pairs a few days ago. It was a great way to end the winter season and
prepare us for the summer programme.
As
I go to print word has just come through of the death of Bill Johnson.
We all extend our sympathy to our hard-working committee member, Fay,
in the sudden loss of her husband. It was only a few short months ago
that she and Bill were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary and
we rejoiced with them. We will always be there for you, Fay.
Last season I put each newsletter on the club's Home Page.
This year I will use a more traditional home page and add the newsletter
to a link of its own. To see the new home page click
here.
Trivia: I placed a
bit of hidden code on our website so I can see what country people
come from when they view our club's site. Although nothing new has been put on the site since
May people are still looking. In the past month visitors came from;
New Zealand 216, Australia 4, United Kingdom 3, USA 3, Germany 1,
Canada 1. Over the 12 months period we had 10,500 visitors. |

Sylvia Rowe R.I.P.
It was with great sadness we heard that Sylvia passed away in May.
Sylvia had been a long and loyal member of our club and her smiling
face, accurate bowling and pleasant nature will be missed by
the many who knew her. May she rest in peace. |
|
Bob Mason R.I.P.
6/7/10
|
Bob was one of those
people who was a true professional. Outstanding both in the
quality and quantity of his
workmanship and in his dealings with others. Every time I spoke to
Bob he had a smile on his face, nothing seemed a problem and there
was always that chirpy/cheeky reply on his lips. For
that reason it was easy to forget how seriously ill he was. His contribution to
our bowling club both as our Treasurer and as a fellow bowler was
very significant and he will be sorely missed. Our thoughts go out to
his family. May he rest in peace.
There is a special tribute to Bob on
the Mother Club's website

John Blackwell
13/8/10
John bowled at Taradale for a few years before
ill health forced him to stop. John was a gentle man who enjoyed both
his bowls and the company
of others - and would loved to have carried on bowling. John was
sometimes seen walking around Anderson Park and occasionally he came down
to our club to watch Jean bowl. We extend our sympathy to Jean and her family
in their loss. |

Bowls NZ May 2010
Historic day for Bowls as Wellington sign on as a Regional Service Centre
Bowls history has been
created with Clubs and Centres from Taranaki in the west and Gisborne East Coast
in the east down to Wellington to benefit from the landmark agreement signed
last evening between Bowls Wellington and Bowls New Zealand. Wellington has
accepted the responsibility of being a regional service centre with the
accountability of providing a support service to clubs and centres within its
region on a range of identified issues that are better supported from a central
point rather than being expected to be delivered by every Centre within the
Region. This will ensure that other Centres and Clubs within the Region can get
back to focusing on delivering what they do best which is ensuring that the “on
the green” experience continues to be fun and rewarding for all our sports
participants.
What does this mean for clubs? The core focus of the RSC will be to support
clubs to be strong and sustainable, through the delivery of the services,
reducing the workload of club administrators so they can spend more time
actually playing bowls and growing their club. |

on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. This does not apply to Mother
Club members who do not belong to our bowling club. They pay nothing.

practise. |
I can now understand why

CONGRATULATIONS TO MANDY AND TESSA
Mandy
Boyd and Tessa Hocking were chosen in
an
Auckland invitation team of young players to take on a Queensland
Under 18 team. They trained with the Queensland Squad under the
guidance of Rob Dobbins and Bill Cornehls, both international coaches,
as well as Kelvin Kerkow and other Australian international players.

Finalists in Young
Player of the Year / Coach of the Year
(August)
Mandy Boyd (Bowls Taradale) is one of four finalists in the Bowls New
Zealand 'Young Player of the Year" award to be decided in September.
The other three players in contention are Andrew Kelly (Canterbury
B.C.), Chris LeLievre (Onehunga) and Clare McCaul (Silverstream). Not
to be outdone, Wilma Ennor's (also Bowls Taradale) efforts have again
been recognised by Bowls N.Z. for her contribution to bowls, as she is
among three coaches named for the "Coach of the Year" position. |
The structure that Wilma set up is
called "Squad6". I have copied the following from Bowls NZ website -
so when we see groups of kids playing on our greens we will have some
idea of what is going on. |
Why Offer It?
An opportunity for secondary school aged students to
be introduced to the game of bowls in a fun and relaxed environment –
important because our National Secondary School Championships has
become an event for the top players
Student Comments
We’ve trialled the concept at Taradale B.C. & the
students loved it . . .
"I have learned a new sport" - 75%
"I enjoyed playing the game" - 88%
"I would recommend that my friends try it" - 100%
"I would like the opportunity to learn and play more" - 75% |

Tessa and Richard Hocking - and
Malia Begley
Tessa, Richard and Malia featured in a special article published in
the Napier Courier on July 28. Their commitment to lawn bowls and the
successes that came their way were well documented plus the support
and encouragement that Wilma gives our young bowlers. Congratulations. |

Top NZ Bowlers In Action at Waipawa
Ian Mason from Waipawa has asked me to promote a tournament his club
is running on September 11-12. Top NZ bowlers are taking part and
everyone is cordially invited to go and watch them in action. In particular he
asked me to promote this to our newer bowlers. This is a great
opportunity for them to see the nation's best in action. Each day's
play commences at 9.00 am. |
