Congratulations Mandy - Our National
Champion
We have a New Zealand bowls Champion from Hawke's Bay!
Napier GHS student Mandy Boyd
17, today won the National Secondary Schools singles final by
beating Amy Brenton (Nayland College, Nelson) 17-9 in the final.
Congratulations to Mandy, her supportive family - and also to
Wilma, Manager/Coach/Mentor.
Mandy won all five games in
section play to progress to the Championship event the following
day. There (in an extremely tough, cut throat section) she won
three of five games to progress to the final four
semi-finalists. In the Semi final she overcame Emma LeLievre
(Thames High School) a former Secondary Schools Champion and
National Under 18 representative. Her opponent in the final,
Amy Brenton has been a two time winner of the National Secondary
Schools girl’s pairs, plus the Kittyhawk (under 20) singles
title holder and is aTrans Tasman under 18 representative. Well
done, Mandy! You have equalled your sister Angela’s fine
efforts in 2001! Both of you, individually or together as a
Pair, will have many more successes in the future.

Congratulations
Jack - HB Open Singles
Jack Halka (Bowls
Taradale) won the Centre Open Singles against Paul (Bart)
Sorenson, (Bowls Napier), by the closest of margins, when he
killed two consecutive ends while being down 18-20. An unanswered
'three' won the game for him in spectacular fashion, 21-20. A
final where the result was in question until the final bowl.
Dramatic, exhilarating entertainment for the many interested
spectators.

Final
of Championship Men's Fours
The Men's Fours began in October but was not completed until
last Saturday. Only two teams remained; Phil Young's team (Phil, Frank
Grantham, Graeme "Pedro" Pedersen, Lucky Roberts) had
two lives. Barry Hanlen's team (Barry, John Hanlen, Morris
Williams, John McLaughlin) had one life. The first game was won
narrowly by Barry Hanlen's team. That meant each side had one
remaining life and so a second game was needed to
determine the champion. This final was far more decisive than the
previous game with
Barry's team again proving the stronger. Congratulations to Barry,
John, Morris and John on taking out the title for 2008-2009. |

Men's Senior Pairs
The semifinal of the Senior Pairs also took place last Saturday.
Jack Halka & Gerald Taylor played Bruce Mitchell
and Ray Falvey and Jack's team was eliminated. That meant Bruce
and Ray played the final with Murray Glassey and Barry Hanlen.
Of the little I saw ends were close and points had to be really
contested but Murray and Barry gradually pulled away
and won the title. Congratulation Murray and Barry (this was Barry's second
title for the day). |

WISE WORDS
Every game is an opportunity to measure yourself against your
own potential. |
|
Etiquette |
It
is poor sportsmanship to attempt to distract the player on the
mat as he is about to bowl. This can be done by talking to the
player, or to others so that the player may hear what is said.
Distraction can also result from remarks by spectators or by
movement by a player at the head. |

PLAYING ON A WINDY DAY:
Do not expect to get the same results on windy days as you would
hope to achieve on calm days. A bowl that is a metre from the jack
in windy conditions will more often than not be in the count. When
playing with the wind at an angle to the green play around the
clock. Do not have your bowl finishing directly into the wind or
finishing with the wind directly behind it. This means that the wind
should always be hitting the side of your bowl as it finishes into
the head. This has less impact on the slowing bowl compared with the
wind hitting its running surface. Remember if you want to understand
how to play in windy conditions then get out and practise on windy
days. |

Humour |
Now I lay me down to
sleep
I pray the Lord my shape to keep.
Please no wrinkles, Please no bags
And please lift my butt before it sags.
Please no age spots, Please no grey
And as for my belly, Please take it away
Please keep me healthy, Please keep me young,
And thank you Lord, For all you've done. |
The Law |
Result of an end – Both Sides Must Agree
Now and again you get disagreements among those measuring an end. Sometimes a player mentions the result
then kicks the bowls away before the other player has time to
agree or disagree. This is what the law says;
Law 39
No bowl should be moved until the opponents have agreed whether
it is a shot or not, except where a bowl has to be moved so that
another bowl can be measured. As the shots are agreed, each shot
bowl can be removed from the head. Shot bowls can be placed in a
group where they will not interfere with measuring. If shot
bowls have been placed in a group, the number of bowls in the
group should be agreed by the opponents. The skips and the
seconds or the marker where appropriate should be told (or have
signalled to them) the number of shots scored in each end.
