WILL YOUR CLUB BE HERE IN 5 YEARS TIME?

You may have read the above article in the recent Bowls New Zealand Magazine and asked yourself what has this got to do with Bowls Taradale? Well your Committee feel that it is important to the future existence and development of the Club. One key issue is related to the future funding of the Club, especially in the form of grants from Trusts, without a well prepared Club Plan funding from such bodies will be difficult if not impossible to obtain.

Your Committee believe that it is essential that we produce a detailed plan to cover the next 5 year period and would welcome participation by as many members as possible in the development of the Plan.

If you wish to participate in the process you are invited to attend a meeting at the Club on TUESDAY 20th JANUARY 2009 at 7.00pm.

National Mandy - Our National Champion

One proud Mum That's our girl I worked hard to get this
Results Ladies Championship Triples
Because this championship began some weeks ago only six teams were left at the beginning of play last Saturday. Teams skipped by Mandy Boyd and Sue Brock had two lives while skips with one life were Del Girven, Paula Evans, Julie Haslett and Fay Johnson. Strong blustery wind conditions did not make play easy but the "young gins" (Mandy Boyd, Angela Boyd and Tessa Hocking) went through undefeated and deserve our congratulations. Their opponents (Paula Evans, Sheryl Glock and Barbara Exeter) are to be commended in reaching the final where they proved themselves worthy opponents.
  Men's Singles
Yesterday morning saw the Men's Single Championship decided. The semifinal was played between Barry Hanlen and Murray Glassey with Murray proving the stronger. When I arrived for the Christmas Ham tournament I was in time to see the last four ends of the final between Murray Glassey and Jack Halka. Few finals would have had such a large and appreciative audience. Precision bowling, both drawing and run shots, were a joy to watch. Jack was his tenacious self but the consistency of Murray's play eventually paid off and he is to be congratulated on winning the championship.
  Men's Championship Triples
Not only were the Ladies Triples played amidst howling norwest gales so too were the Men's triples. Weather conditions meant accurate draw bowling became a real challenge but quite a few players defied the odds and played outstanding bowling. The presence so many bowlers competing including some who were still Juniors was an encouraging sign and the day saw its fair share of surprise results. By day's close six  teams remained in contention. Teams skipped by Rolly Hoare and Murray Glassey have two lives. Jack Halka, Lex Parsons, Frank Grantham and Phil Young each have one life. This competition will continue at a date yet to be announced.
  Club Christmas Ham Tournament
Yesterday afternoon two full greens bore testament to the large number of club members who took part in this year's Christmas Ham Tournament. The weather was grotty but the company exceptional and the organisation tip-top. Thank you to all those who organised prizes, made up the teams, acted as barmen or chefs, and anyone else who made the day run so smoothly.

Coaching

Tips For Setting Goals
Goal setting can be a powerful process in helping you improve your bowls. The following mnemonic (SMART) might help you set effective goals.

S    Specific                  (I want to draw 2 consecutive bowls close to the jack)
M    Measurable            (Both bowls must finish less than 1 metre from the jack)
A    Attainable               (Keep goals simple and within your reach)
R    Relevant
T    Time-bound             (Complete within the next fortnight)

The Law

Responsibilities of Seconds (Law 37.3)
The second should:

·         be responsible for the score card

·         enter the names of all players of both teams on the score card;

·         record all shots scored for and against the team as each end is completed;

·         at the end of the game, hand the score card to the skip who should record on it the time that the game finished and then sign it.

Humour

Using Your Noggin

Telephone conversation goes:
"Hello, is this the police?"
"Yes it is. How can we help you?"
"I'm calling to report about my neighbour, Kevin. He's hiding cocaine inside his firewood!"
The police take Kevin’s details. "Thank you very much for the call."
The next day, police officers descend on Kevin’s house in great numbers. They search the house and then go out to the shed where the firewood is kept. Using axes, they bust open every piece of firewood but they find no cocaine. They swear at Kevin and leave.
The phone rings at Kevin’s house.
"Hey, Kevin. Did the cops come?"
"Yeah!"
"Did they chop up your firewood?"
"Yep."
"Happy Christmas, mate"
