DISTRICT SHIELD 2008 / 2009
The District Shield was played over the weekend and TARADALE WON!!!
Going in to the last round two clubs, Taradale and
Heretaunga, had the same number of points. The last games were
close but our boys edged ahead of Heretaunga and they are to be
congratulated on the high quality of bowling they produced.
Singles: Murray Glassey
Pairs: Barry Hanlen, Frank Grantham
Triples: Bryan Gilbertson, Jack Philip, Ernie Friedlander
Fours: Ross Hamilton, John Hanlen, Phil Young, Paul Selby
(The following is taken from Bowls Heretaunga

scored 14 points. Both Taradale and Heretaunga were in
contention for the title going into the final game where Murray
Glassey beat George Ngametua 25-21 in an enthralling exhibition

East Coast Chartered Clubs -
annual three day tournament:
(taken from Bowls Heretaunga
website)
After three days of competition Bruce Ferrick’s team of Bruce
Stewart, Byron Brook and Alan Ferrick (Heretaunga Club) made the
most of ‘home’ advantage to win the major event. Phil Young’s
team of Jack Philip, Bryan Gilbertson and Ross Hamilton (Taradale
Club) were runners up.
Women's Pennants
and Junior Singles
Good luck to those ladies competing in the pennants over the
next few days and to our bowlers (men and women) competing in
the Junior Singles next weekend at Heretaunga.

The main idea in bowls is to accept what you cannot change
and to keep trying to improve the things you can change

Behind The Mat
Hand
your opponent’s bowl to him/her or place it next to the mat.
Stand at least 1 metre behind the mat. The bowls should be to
the rear and side of the mat. If the bowls are directly behind
the mat they can be a danger to those players who step back
after delivering a bowl. There should not be too much talking
behind the mat – it can disrupt the player’s concentration.
|
Basics Matter
All bowlers, irrespective of their skills level, should get
their coach to look at their bowling action at least once or
twice a year. It is not unusual for small faults to creep into
your technique and thus reduce the percentage of successful
shots. Good coaches will not apply major surgery but will help
you to get rid of the problem. You will generally find the
winner of a game is the one who does the basics best.

Collision Between Jack And Bowl
Last week our lead rolled up the jack and at the same time a
bowl from the next rink came very close to hitting our moving
jack. I asked several people what should happen if their bowl
had come any closer to our jack and I received varying answers.
(a) stop their bowl
(b) stop our jack
(c) let them collide
I am told if it looks as if a moving jack and moving bowl are
going to collide - you let them. They are both redelivered
LAW 33.3 Jack displacement by a neutral person or neutral
object
1 Displacement of a jack in its original course
If a jack in its original course is displaced by a neutral
person or neutral object, it should be re-delivered by the same
player.

Overheard on the Napier-Hastings Bus Last Week
The bus stops in Kennedy Road and two Italian men get on. They
sit down and engage in an animated conversation. The lady
sitting next to them ignores them at first, but her attention is
galvanized when she hears one of them say the following: "Emma
come first. Den I come. Den two asses come together. I come
once-a-more. Two asses, they come together again. I come again
and pee twice. Then I come one lasta time."
" You foul-mouthed sex obsessed swine," retorted the lady
indignantly. "In this country.......we don't speak aloud in
public places about our sex lives........"
"Hey, coola down lady," said the man. "Who talkin' abouta sex?
I'm a justa tellin' my frienda how to spell 'Mississippi'."
