LAST WEEK'S RESULTS
CLUB

Taradale Friends' Day:  Last Wednesday, when we hosted our annual  Taradale Friends' Day Hetero Triples, the weather was cold, damp and overcast but it did not deter the enthusiasm of those taking part. Two full greens bore testament to the popularity of the event. Entry was free, competition was strong and raffles were well supported. Thank you to Bruce and the many helpers who made the day so enjoyable.

Women's Junior Singles: was held last weekend in brilliant sunshine. Close games seemed the order of the day (21-19, 21-18 in two Saturday games that I watched). Day 1 finished with three Juniors still in contention. Barbara Exeter (two lives), Lois Hook (one) and Colleen McLaughlin (one).

Yesterday Colleen narrowly beat Lois so that left only Barbara and Colleen in the competition. Spectators were treated to a very high standard of draw bowling and eventually Colleen emerged the 2009 Junior Singles Champion after winning the final 21-18. Congratulations Colleen (yippee!! - I'm allowed to say that). Barbara must be commended on putting up such a staunch fight.

A very special thank you must go to Bruce Mitchell for the many hours he has spent this season organising, reorganising, phone calling, marking, umpiring ... and the list goes on. The Club is indebted to him for so much.

Thanks Bruce

Women's Championship Fours
Three teams began the week still in contention; Mandy (two lives), Fay and Wendy (both with one life). The latter two played midweek and Wendy was successful. This means we are now down to two teams only. They are Mandy Boyd, Angela Boyd, Sheryl Glock and Tessa Hocking who will be up against Wendy Mitchell, Val Ives, Jean Speakman and Ivy Graham. We wish both teams well in the final.

HB CENTRE

Bowls Hawkes Bay website had this to say after Day One: News from the National Interclub finals at Palmerston North -  The Bowls Taradale Fours team finished the day with two wins from three games , including a victory against the star studded Eastbourne side 22-21 - only just, after being 'up' 21-0 early into the game.

Final results Men's Interclub Division One - (1) Eastbourne, (2) North East Valley, (3) Carlton/Cornwall, (4) Mt. Maunganui, (5) Burnside, (6) Taradale.

COACHING TIP
COACHING VIDEO / DVD
Our club owns a video and a DVD called “Coaching Lawn Bowls – The New Zealand Way”. You are very welcome to borrow this (maximum of seven days) – there is no charge. It is a “must see” for all new bowlers and those wanting to improve their bowling. It demonstrates correct technique, shows bowling strategies to practise, and illustrates common faults. Please contact Wilma if you want to hire the video or the DVD.

ETIQUETTE

Walk The Line
Don’t encroach on the adjoining rink. When walking up the green try and keep to the middle. Remember other players on adjoining rinks.

THE LAW
Their bowl Is Going To Hit Our Jack!
During a Gala at a local Bowling Club a bowl from the neighbouring rink was heading for our jack. The person on the head lifted the jack and let the bowl pass through. She said, “I am allowed to do this.”  Was she right?

Law 33.6  Jack displacement by a bowl from a neighbouring rink
If a jack at rest on the rink is in danger of being moved by a bowl from a neighbouring rink, any player at the head or the marker should stop the bowl

SOMETHING TO PONDER

The Seven Wonders of the World
A teacher asked her class to list what they thought were the present Seven Wonders of the World. The students cast the most votes for:

  1. Pyramids of Egypt

  2. Taj Mahal

  3. Panama canal

  4. Empire State Building

  5. Grand canyan

  6. St Peter’s Basilica

  7. China’s Great Wall

While gathering the votes, the teacher noted that one girl had not turned in her paper yet. She asked the student if she was having trouble with her list. The girl replied, “Yes, a little. I couldn’t quite make up my mind because there were so many.”

The teacher said, “Well, tell us what you have and maybe we can help.”

The girl hesitated, then read, “I think the Seven Wonders of the World are:

  1. To see

  2. To hear

  3. To touch

  4. To taste

  5. To feel

  6. To laugh

  7. To love
