April 10.12 Fri/Sun Kittyhawk 20/Under at Auckland
Mandy Boyd won the Region 3 qualifying event to earn a place in the National Kittyhawk Women’s under 20 singles finals  held during Easter at the Pakuranga Bowling Club in Auckland.   This was a round-robin event where the contestants played seven rounds in two sections and then a post section semi-final and final.  As expected Mandy proved she was up there with the best young players in NZ. She reached the quarter finals where she went down (only just) to Abbey Dugdale (Dunedin) 5 – 11, 9 – 3, 2 - 1.

COACHING TIP
GOAL SETTING
Any athlete without specific performance goals, training goals and practice goals might be going somewhere but is probably going nowhere. Aim at nothing and that is mostly what you get. At best a ship without a rudder.
Here is an example you might like to try. I have taken it from Bowls NZ website (and modified it slightly)

Objectives:
1. Drawing for position
2. Drawing to off-centre jack
3. Draw/Drive/Draw
4. Drawing to centre line then to off centred spot

The Game:  Played by two participants. Bowls per player – 4

Mat on the 2m mark
Sequence of play going up and down rink:

1. Short Jack - draw within half metre
2. Draw “outside in” right spot
3. Drive backhand right spot

4. Med Jack – draw within half metre
5. Med Jack – drive
6. Draw “outside in” left spot
7. Drive left spot

8. Draw to ditch – within 1 mat of target

9. Long Jack - drive bare jack (place bowls/flapjacks either or both sides of jack to make it easier – but jack needs to go in the ditch)

ETIQUETTE

On The Head
Stand at least two metres behind the bowls on the head making sure you do not kick any bowls accidentally – if so, your opposing player replaces it. You can indicate with your foot where you want the bowl to finish but remove your foot as soon as the bowl is greened. Stand still till the players have delivered their bowls.

THE LAW
THE WRONG TEAM DELIVERS THE JACK

What should happen when it is discovered that the wrong team delivered the jack?

Law 22    Delivering the jack
If, before a bowl has been played by each team, a player notices that the wrong team has delivered the jack, the correct team will re-start the end.  If, after a bowl has been played by each team, a player notices that the wrong team has delivered the jack, play in that end should continue in that order.

HUMOUR
Anyone for Golf?
A vicar, a doctor and an wharfie  were waiting one morning for a particularly slow group of golfers.
They fumed, "What's with these guys? We must have been waiting for 15 minutes!"
The doctor chimed in, "I don't know, but I've never seen such slack golf!"
The vicar said, "Here comes the greenkeeper. Let's have a word with him."
"Hi George. what's with that group ahead of us? They're rather slow, aren't they?"
The greenkeeper replied, "Oh, yes, that's a group of blind firefighters. They lost their sight saving our clubhouse from a fire last year, so we always let them play for free anytime."
The group was silent for a moment.
The vicar said, "That's so sad. I will say a special prayer for them tonight."
The doctor said, "Good idea, and I'm going to contact my specialist friend and see if there's anything he can do for them."
The wharfie said, "Why can't these guys play at night?"
