NEWSLETTER

Newsletter 31 -  20 April 2009

This will by my last newsletter for the season. I have enjoyed putting them together and trust that they have been informative and worthwhile. Your ideas are important so if you think something new should be added to our newsletters, or something already included should be given the boot please let me know. I am especially grateful to Les Stuart for keeping me fed with a selection of photos to help liven up the website. Thanks also to Bruce, Wilma, Val, Lilian and the many others who sent me information throughout the season.

A big thank you to our committee for sharing their talents and time to make our club run smoothly - your efforts are appreciated. Finally a big thank you to everyone for your contribution to our club ... what a neat club, great spirit, good bowlers, everyone mixes, no cliques, plenty of volunteers, we’re always made to feel welcome, clean grounds, everyone speaks to you ….. these are just a sample of what I have heard during the bowling season. We are not perfect but each member can feel justifiably proud of the collective comments above. Thanks for making the season such a memorable one.

Enjoy the winter (bowling, resting, travelling, blobbing out) and let's meet together next season - and at the AGM on June 21.

LAST WEEK'S RESULTS
CLUB
Student Bowls Championship
The Bowls Taradale Student Championships were held on Wednesday 15th April. There were six entries, two from each of the following schools - Napier Girls' High, Tamatea High and Taradale High. Three of the players have been with our club for the past 2/3 years and the other students have had approximately 6/7 sessions with the introduction of the "Schools Competition".

It was really gratifying to see the improvement made by the newer bowlers throughout the day. Every student won at least one game in the "Round Robin" draw. They are to be congratulated on their attitude and commitment. I believe they will be well prepared for next year! Our three "resident" bowlers played very well with both Malia and Tessa reaching their final game with equal points. After being 8 down in the earlier stages of the game, Tessa fought back to take the lead from Malia with 2 ends to go. Malia, however, played 3 beautiful draw bowls to seal the championship with Richard Hocking in 3rd place. These young bowlers are going from strength to strength and if we can continue to support them we will be helping our sport continue its growth.

Thank you Alan Boardman and John Ward for preparing the greens for us;thanks again to John and Sue Brock and Sheryl Glock for marking for the games and for Robin Hocking as our main supporter. It was great to have the donor presenting the trophy to Malia Begley, Napier Girls" High School.

National Mixed Pairs 2x4x2 -at  Rotorua
Paul Selby and Jane Paterson represented 'Region Three' in the National finals of the 2x4x2 Mixed Pairs at Rotorua on Thursday and Friday 16/17 April.  They finished 3rd equal and can feel very pleased with themselves for beating the eventual runner-up,
Ross Brown and Trish Marr (St Clair, Dunedin).

Champion of Champions Junior Singles (men and women)
This took place at Bowls Napier on Saturday. Colleen won her first game easily then went down narrowly to Havelock North.
Dave Roberts is to be congratulated on reaching the semifinals where he went under by the closest of margins (21-20)
Well done Colleen and Dave.

Burton Cup - Gisborne - Easter Weekend
Congratulations to Paul
Sorensen, Jack Philip, Brendon McIlroy and Phil Young for reaching the finals of the Burton Cup ... and just going under.
It was a brilliant final," Phil Bennett, skip of the winning side, said.
“It was so close and you could not have had anything better. Congrats to Paul and his team. They were the bottom placed qualifier but they picked up some great scalps on their way to the final."

Very Successful Secondary School Competition
Following a meeting of Youth Bowl coordinators in Auckland, in February, I was given permission to trial an interschool bowls programme for secondary school students. I was able to address all of the school sports' coordinators at a meeting at Sport Hawke's Bay. This resulted in 6 students, (3 teams of pairs) from each of the following schools - Havelock North, Sacred Heart, Taradale High and Tamatea High ( a total of 24 totally new bowlers) attending the sessions at Bowls Taradale for a total of seven sessions of approx 1hr 30 mins. each Monday afternoon.

Thanks must go to club mates Sue and John Brock, Robin Hocking (and P.E. teacher Russell Ennor from Tamatea) for their assistance in getting the students there and helping out generally. Feedback has been positive both verbal and written.

Results from the questionnaires returned were : I have learned a new sport - 75%
I enjoyed playing the game (2 bowl speed bowls) - 88%
The games were the right length of time (20 mins) - 63%
                               Instructions were clear - 100%
We were/were not overloaded with information - 100%
I would recommend that my friends try it - 100%
I would like to learn more and go to Sec. School Nationals - 50%
I would like the opportunity to learn and play more - 75%

It was great to have both Dave Porteous and Mike Tamati from Heretaunga Club come along to a session. They are going to set up the same programme for the Hastings Schools and that then means we can have an inter-district competition to promote this great sport. Lawn bowls has had a 77% increase in student participation from 2000 - 2008.

COACHING TIP
TALK TO YOURSELF ...
and ... USE YOUR IMAGINATION
Many bowlers talk to themselves to help their focus or concentration. It can also be used to relieve pressure and maintain that calm, relaxed, in-control state, which is so important when performing a set of skills.

Imagery is probably the most neglected and under developed ability we have. Jack Nicklaus says 90% of playing a good golf shot is setting yourself up correctly then picturing in your mind how the shot will happen. Bowling is no different.

PRE-SHOT ROUTINE - Position the jack in the hand, Identify the line, Visualise the delivery – line and weight, Move onto the mat.

SMOOTH AND STRAIGHT - Success in bowls comes down to consistent execution of just two essential skills.

·         Smooth release (rolling the bowl away on its running surface)

·         Straight lines (delivering the bowl consistently down the intended line).

ETIQUETTE

When An End Is Killed
Please carry the bowls when returning them after a killed end.
Do not kick them up the green.
Bowls should not be dropped on the green

THE LAW
WIND MOVES THE JACK

I was playing a game of triples on a very windy day when a sudden gust of wind caused the jack to move about half a metre. You might think it an easy task to replace the jack to its former position but what if, before the jack had moved, two opposing bowls were very close (it was a "measure") and it was not easy to get the jack into its exact previous position?

Law 53 Unforeseen incidents
If, during the course of play, the position of the jack or a bowl is altered by the wind, a storm or any other unforeseen incident, the skips or opponents in Singles should put the jack or bowl back to its former position. If they cannot agree on the jack’s or bowl’s former position, they should declare the end dead.
