BRUCE FERRICK - REGIONAL CHAMPION
Earlier this week Bruce Ferrick, winner of the HB Men's Singles, played in Masterton against the winners from the other areas that make up our Region. Bruce beat the Manawatu winner, then he won against the representative from the Wairarapa and finally he beat the Gisborne singles champion. That makes him the Regional Champion who will represent our region against the winners from all the other NZ regions - sometime in April in Invercargill.
EAST COAST CHARTERED CLUBS FOURS
Bowls Taradale has been abuzz this week as the mother club hosted the East Coast Chartered Clubs Fours Tournament. Teams came from as far afield as Gisborne and Ohope. Old friendships were renewed, new ones formed and the bowling greens were alive for three days. The weather was stunning for two of the three days and the greens proved themselves second to none in the Bay for reliability. Shots could be played with confidence and the standard of bowling was up there with the best.

Congratulations to the committee (Dave Jones, Bryan Gilbertson, Phil Young and Dave Kaye) for the way the event was organised. The bowlers I spoke enjoyed the tournament and left knowing that everything was done to make their three days of bowling a pleasurable experience.

TREMAIN'S EARTHQUAKE TRIPLES
Thanks to Tremain's Real Estate sponsorship prizes were generous and entries full in last Friday's Earthquake Triples. Four games (plus two "spiders") were played under grey skies before those taking part moved to the club rooms for a drink and chat. This event had been postponed from last month.

OUCH AWARD: I feel the time is right to have a special OUCH AWARD
One team should have won a prize for their four wins ... but forgot to put their names on their card!!!

I can't spell their names but reliable sources suggest these initials - CD, MT, DG

Our sponsor was Sue Willsone and Tremain Real Estate. Sue's a consistent top seller and member of the $90mil dollar club. She likes to think that she can offer "sensible but sensitive service", is always happy to talk real estate and is pleased to continue Tremain's long standing association with the Taradale Club.
TURKEY AWARD
While we are making awards I did hear that another special person (BM) delivered his first bowl before rolling the jack. It has been rumoured he is thinking of starting up his own version of 20/20 bowling.

PS That is far more award-winning than someone else who had two wrong biases.

I wonder what he is aiming at
  • Generally speaking, you aren't learning much when your lips are moving

  • Growing old beats the alternative – dying young.

BOWLS HB - JUNIOR MEN'S PAIRS
Three teams from our club took part in the HB Junior Men's Pairs over the weekend. We have a big crop of juniors so some club members expressed a little disappointment in the low number of club entries. The opportunity to test themselves against other new bowlers can be an exciting challenge. However not all bowlers have to be competitive; some prefer the more social side of the sport and that preference must be respected.

I have said this before but it bears repeating. The level of bowling skills seen among our junior bowlers is very high. Not only did two Taradale teams make Post-Section play (B Gardner/D Henderson and L Fitness/B Godber) but both teams went all the way and had to play one another in the final. To get that far each player had to perform well and had to be consistent. Midway through the final the score was 11-10 but then Dave and Barry began to extend themselves .. and the score. Eventually they won comfortably but all players should feel satisfied at the way the games were played and the results achieved. Congratulations Dave, Barry, Lloyd and Bryan.

JUNIOR BOWLERS
(Dave Roberts)
On Saturday 21 April and Sunday 22 April a 5s tournament exclusively for junior bowlers will be played at Bowls Napier. Teams of five will be selected from any junior player wishing to participate in this format. Each team involves 2 players playing pairs and 3 players playing triples.

Shortly there will be a list on the clubroom notice board, if you are interested please write your name on the list by Sunday 1st April. This will give the club time to select teams and enter the tournament.

Practices will be held at the club and at Napier bowls in the weeks leading up to the tournament

This is another prestigious tournament; let’s try to finish the season on a winning note.

OUT OF THE FRYING PAN AND INTO THE FIRE
A man was sitting reading his papers when his wife hit him round the head with a frying pan.
'What was that for?' the man asked.
The wife replied, 'That was for the piece of paper with the name Jenny on it that I found in your pants pocket'.
The man then said 'When I was at the races last week, Jenny was the name of the horse I bet on.'
The wife apologised and went on with the housework.
Three days later the man is watching TV when his wife bashes him on the head with an even bigger frying pan, knocking him unconscious. Upon re-gaining consciousness the man asked why she had hit again.
Wife replied.. 'Your horse phoned'

CONGRATULATIONS
To Clark Nicol who won a set of new bowls during the Chartered Clubs tournament.

COACHING TIP

GAME PLAN
Lawn bowling is a coactive sport where teams play games by taking turns, rather than an interactive sport like hockey where all members of opposing teams are continuously engaged. Therefore, key aspects of a competition game plan apply intermittently while the team has possession of the rink. The plan should be embraced by all members of the team, and committed to writing where circumstances permit.

Generally, a game plan will reflect a chosen strategy, and will include the intended tactics for achieving it. Simplicity is an attribute of a game plan that makes it easier for competitors to remember when under pressure. Complicated or highly detailed game plans tend to be forgotten in tight contests. A game plan should allow for changes should particular tactics prove unproductive. Therefore, flexibility is another positive attribute for a game plan provided a team changes its tactics in a coordinated way.

A game plan should not ordinarily contain tactics designed to mask known weaknesses. Weaker elements of performance should receive attention during the training and practice plan of the individual or team, rather than as elements of a game plan. Careful attention to shortcomings in the days or weeks before the starting day of a competition should have replaced weaknesses with new strengths.

If the competition green is obviously slow, or exposed to a gusty, variable wind, the game plan should reflect a determination to minimise short or narrow bowls, and to avoid continual changes of delivery line in efforts to ‘fight’ the wind.

Post competition analysis should include relating performances to relevant game plans.

Game plan preparation:
·
Minimum of 2 bowls ALWAYS in head
·
Don’t drop more than 1 point
·
           Don't be greedy.
·
           Persisting with winning lengths
·
Roll the jack to accurate lengths.
·
           Avoid short bowling.
·
           Avoid unreasonable risks.
·
Have bowls in the nucleus of the head.
·
           Avoid distractions.
·
           Support and encourage team mates

If losing the plan options become:
·
           mat location,
·
           use of hand,
·
           length choice,
·
           change of shots previously employed.

QUESTION: A few weeks ago I was in a game where a person played someone else’s bowl and it was a toucher.
What should happen?

Law 47.2     Playing another player’s bowl
1. If a player plays another player’s bowl instead of their own, the other player’s bowl should be replaced with the player’s own bowl.

2. If the bowl which was replaced was marked or nominated as a toucher, the player’s own bowl should be marked or nominated as a toucher.

BE A GOOD LOSER

What you are as a person is far more important that what you are as a bowler

If you can't accept losing, you don’t deserve to win.

The following is not quite bowling - but if you don't know these rules you might not reach the bowling green

Two of the give way rules are changing

Updated: 29 February 2012

To make our roads safer, two of the give way rules are changing. These changes come into effect at 5am on Sunday 25 March 2012. Until then the current give-way rules apply. These changes will affect all drivers, riders, pedestrians and cyclists. Make sure you know the new rules so you’ll know what to do.

To see a video explaining these new rules click here

If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else’s,
we’d grab ours back.

NEW IDEAS
The elderly priest, speaking to the younger priest said, ''You had a good idea to replace the first four pews with plush bucket theatre seats. It worked like a charm. The front of the church always fills first now.''

The young priest nodded, and the old priest continued, ''And you told me adding a little more beat to the music would bring young people back to  church, so I supported you when you brought in that rock 'n roll gospel choir. Now our services are consistently packed to the balcony.''

''Thank you, Father,'' answered the young priest. ''I am pleased that you are open to the new ideas of youth.''

''All of these ideas have been well and good,'' said the elderly priest, ''but I'm afraid you've gone too far with the drive-thru confessional.''

''But, Father,'' protested the young priest, ''my confessions and the donations have nearly doubled since I began that!''

''Yes,'' replied the elderly priest, ''and I appreciate that.  But the flashing neon sign, 'Toot 'n Tell or Go to Hell' cannot stay on the church roof!"
