KITTYHAWKS NATIONAL UNDER 20 MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SINGLES
(Bowls NZ website)
Over the Easter weekend, the whoops and cheers of delight and the cries of intense concentration will echo around the Pakuranga Bowling Club's greens as the Kittyhawks National Under 20 Men's and Women's Singles swings through in a brilliant blaze of colourful bowls and smiling young faces.

New Zealand's premier national youth event, Kittyhawks is where you'll find those teenagers who can roll with the best, and those that already are.

Among the class bowlers at this year's tournament are Wellington's Nicole Toomey (2011 National Secondary School Singles Champion), 2010 National Secondary School Singles Champion Tessa Hocking (Hawkes Bay) and under-18 NZ representative Monte Pawa (Far North); not to mention a confident assortment of superb young bowlers reaching for the silverware.

RESULTS

DAYS 1-2: Section Play
Richard    4 wins / 3 losses
Tessa      4 wins / 3 losses

As a result of doing well in Section Play both Richard and Tessa reached the Championship Section on Day 3. From there on it was sudden death. Richard went down in his first game but he had reached the last 16 players from the whole of NZ. Well done, Richard.

Tessa went further and reached the semifinals where she was beaten by the eventual winner, Heather McIlroy from Auckland. Congratulations Tessa.

JUNIOR BOWLERS 2.4.2 TOURNAMENT
This tournament was to have been held on Easter Monday at Wairere. It has been cancelled.

CLOSING DAY SUNDAY APRIL 29th
A sheet has been posted on the notice board for people to enter names. This is for CATERING PURPOSES ONLY

On their way to play bowls  - or to buy helmets?

Everyone says exercise is good for you - or is it?

If walking/cycling is good for your health, the Postman should be immortal. A whale swims all day, only eats fish, drinks water and is fat. A rabbit runs and hops and only lives for approximately 10 years. A tortoise doesn’t run and does nothing, yet it lives for 450 years.

RELAX
The ability to remain calm and relaxed when the game is not going well is a skill that needs to be learned and practised.

Some techniques that can help are:
1. Deep breathing
2. Breathing by numbers (in 1 out 2 up to 10)
3. Visualise a place of calm (beach, garden, lake, stream, a quiet place)
4. Progressive relaxation (centering, draining the tension away)
5. Adopt a passive attitude.
6. A physically comfortable position.
7. Self talk. Relax mind and muscles.
8. Think of a number, word or symbol to dwell on.

QUESTION: I was playing a game of triples on a very windy day when a sudden gust of wind caused the jack to move about half a metre. Should you leave the jack in its new position, or put it back, or go and have a beer?

Law 53           Unforeseen incidents
If, during the course of play, the position of the jack or a bowl is altered by the wind, a storm or any other unforeseen incident, the skips or opponents in Singles should put the jack or bowl back to its former position. If they cannot agree on the jack’s or bowl’s former position, they should declare the end dead.

ETIQUETTE IN A NUTSHELL
Be punctual.
Respect the rules.
Follow the instructions given to you.
Respect the decisions of the umpire.
Be polite to your opponents.
Watch your language.
Obey your skip.
Control your joy when you win.
Be able to "take it" when you lose.

LABOUR DEPARTMENT COMES VISITING
The Department of Labour claimed a Central Hawkes Bay farmer was not paying proper wages to his workers and sent an agent out to investigate.
Department of Labour employee: "I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them."
Farmer: "Well, there's my farm hand who has been with me for three years. I pay him $200 a week plus free room and board. Then there's the mentally challenged worker. He works about 18 hours every day and does about 90% of all the work around here. He makes about $10 per week, pays his own room and board and I buy him a bottle of bourbon every Saturday night so he can cope with life."

Department of Labour
employee: "That's the guy I want to talk to... the mentally challenged one."
Farmer: "That would be me."

You often hear people say, "You lose more games than you win",
so the following quote is appropriate.
It doesn't matter if you try and try and try again, and fail.
But it does matter if you try and fail, and fail to try again.

THE PRINCE AND THE BEAUTIFUL PRINCESS
Once upon a time, there was a sad prince who, through no fault of his own, was cast under a spell by an evil witch. The curse was that the prince could speak only one word each year. However, he could save up the words so that if he did not speak for a whole year, the following year he was allowed to speak two words. (This was before the time of letter writing or sign language.)

One day, he met a beautiful princess (ruby lips, golden hair, sapphire eyes) and fell madly in love with her. With the greatest difficulty, he refrained from speaking for 2 whole years so that he could look at her and say, "My darling." But at the end of these 2 years, he wished to tell her that he loved her. So he waited 3 more years without speaking, bringing the total number of silent years to 5.

At the end of these 5 years, he realized that he had to ask her to marry him. So he waited another 4 years without speaking.

Finally, as the 9th year of silence ended, his joy knew no bounds.

Leading the lovely princess to the most secluded and romantic place in that beautiful royal garden, the prince heaped a hundred red roses on her lap, knelt before her, and taking her hand in his, said, "My darling, I love you! Will you marry me?"

And the princess tucked a strand of golden hair behind her dainty ear, opened her sapphire eyes in wonder, and parting her ruby lips, said, "Pardon?"
