PRINTING IS EXPENSIVE
Those of you who own a printer and use it often will know how expensive printing can be.
Two cartridges will cost about $100 or two refills will be about half of that.

Graeme and Diane Cross from CARTRIDGE WORLD in Napier have kindly offered to supply the ink I need to print off the newsletters each week. Bowls Taradale, and myself in particular, are very appreciative of their offer. Please acknowledge their help when you see Graeme (Bay View) on the green and try to support their business if you can.

PRINCESS ALEXANDRA MIXED FOURS TOURNAMENT
Congratulations to John & Sue Brock, Johnny Ward & Fay Johnson for finishing 3rd in this year’s Princess Alexandra Mixed Fours Tournament held at the Princess Alexandra Retirement Village in Ahuriri on Thursday. Our Taradale team tried hard to defend the trophy they won last year but had to settle for playing off for 3rd & 4th place which they won comfortably. A fine day of bowls and lunch were had by all, Well done team

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S OPEN PAIRS
Over the weekend Bowls HB held the Men's and Women's Open Pairs. Bowls Taradale was well represented in both Tournament events.
Our men made up 13 of the 52 competing teams while our women provided 8 teams of the 32 taking part.

WOMEN - DAY 2
Four pairs made post-section play; Angela Boyd & Lynda Boyd, Sue Brock & Maree Turner, Sheryl Glock & Barbara Exeter, and Cheryl Humphrey & Marie Fenton.
The team from our club that went further than the others was that of Sheryl and Barbara - but well done to all who took part. Some were Junior bowlers competing in a Centre event for the first time and several came so close to qualifying.

MEN - DAY 2
Three (and a half) Taradale teams made it through to Day 2; Don Neilson & John Brock, Ernie Friedlander & Lex Parsons, John McLaughlin & Morris Williams and Richard Hocking (with Dean Drummond). The many who came to watch saw some great bowling despite the blustery conditions. The day finished a little early with four teams still in contention. Richard Hocking & Dean Drummond will play Barry Wakely and Graham Gaut in one semifinal. The other one will consist of Dave and Mark Stevenson against Rusty Smith and Glen Allen.

My daughter asked me for a pet spider for her birthday, so I went to our local pet shop. They were $70
Blow this, I thought, I can get one cheaper off the web.

CONCENTRATION - Barry and Dave

CITRUS ORCHARD VACANCY
The woman applying for a job in a citrus orchard in Keri Keri seemed to be far too qualified for the job; given her arts and education degrees from Auckland University and her jobs as a social worker and school teacher. The foreman said, ”I have to ask you this: "Have you had any actual experience in picking lemons?"

"Well, as a matter of fact, I have!"

"I've been divorced three times, owned two Skodas, and voted for John Banks."

CONCENTRATION - Ivy and Barbara

MONDAY WOMEN'S TRIPLES INTERCLUB
Rain interrupted play after only 5 or 6 ends. They intend to carry on tomorrow morning at Heretaunga. After that they will have lunch and play their next game.

Paddy says, "Mick, I'm thinking of buying a Labrador."
"Bugger that," says Mick, "have you seen how many of their owners go blind?"

COACH SAYS "PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT"
Practice sessions develop and build on existing skills. Match play is where those skills will be demonstrated. Quality practice induces and requires high levels of concentration. This will flow on into match performance. Focus attention on developing sound routines until they become automatic.

Bowlers need to practise skills on a daily basis. It is only by doing this that one can become good at the skill.  Some examples of skills might be: Draw to a jack, draw to a spilled jack, draw to the ditch, wrest a bowl with a yard-on, drive a bowl or the jack, play a run shot, deliver the jack – short, medium, long.

CONGRATULATIONS JOHN AND JOHN
Last Wednesday John Calnan and John McLaughlin became officially accredited Bowls NZ coaches. To get to that stage they had to
  • attend a full day's coaching course
  • complete a written assessment including questions on theory, coaching principles, the laws of bowling
  • coach bowlers for 20 hours
  • be assessed by the person training them

Colleen was at the Kia Toa Gala last Wednesday so she has yet to complete the last segment

THE LAW BOOK - WHAT TO DO WHEN AN END IS KILLED
An end is killed and one skip wants the bowls taken back to the end that has just been played but the other does not. What happens?
Does the team that placed the mat have the choice?
Does the team that killed the end have the choice?
Is there another solution?
Do you know the law relating to dead ends?

Law 31        Dead End
A dead end is not counted as a completed end even if all the bowls required to be played have been played.

A dead end should be replayed in the same direction unless the skips, or opponents in Singles, agree to play it in the opposite direction.
If the jack and bowls need to be transferred to the opposite end of the rink before the end is replayed, they should be CARRIED up the rink to avoid distracting players on neighbouring rinks.

If the skips or opponents in Singles or the umpire declare an end dead, the first to play in that end should also play first when the end is replayed.

ETIQUETTE

Do not pass or walk
in front of the player
who was the last to play.

They have the right to see
how their bowl progresses.

JOE'S MEMORIAL STONE
Joe passed away and his will provided $30,000 for an elaborate funeral.
As the last guests departed the affair, his wife, Helen, turned to her oldest friend. "Well, I'm sure Joe would be pleased," she said.
"I'm sure you're right," replied Jody, who lowered her voice and leaned in close. "How much did this really cost?"
"All of it?" said Helen. "Thirty thousand."
"No!" Jody exclaimed. "I mean, it was very nice, but $30,000?"
Helen answered. "The funeral was $6,500. I donated $500 to the church. The wake, food and drinks were another $500. The rest went for the memorial stone."
Jody computed quickly. "$22,500 for a memorial stone? My God, how big is it?!"
"Two and a half carats."
