MONDAY WOMEN'S TRIPLES INTERCLUB
Not the best of results last week (two losses) but there is still time to win the lead back again.
Currently Taradale is in second place and there are still two days play left. We wish both teams all the best.

WOMEN'S OPEN FOURS
This was played at Havelock North and of the two Taradale teams entered Colleen Ferrick's team  reached the final - what a great result.
(Barbara Exeter, Maree Turner, Sheryl Glock and Colleen Ferrick). I am thankful to Colleen Ferrick for the following report and photo.

Two Bowls Taradale combinations were among the sixteen competing teams playing in the HB Centre Women’s Open Fours at the Havelock North Bowling Club this weekend. Margaret Hain, Cheryl Humphrey, Karen Grainger and Marie Fenton failed to qualify for post section play, but defiantly defeated and prevented the arguably, most favoured team from qualifying in their final Saturday game.

Bowl’s Taradale’s Colleen Ferrick, Sheryl Glock, Maree Turner and Barbara Exeter won all four games on Saturday, to find themselves included among only two qualifying sides for post-section play. A considerable support crew from both clubs watched the final, which was played in very windy, difficult conditions. The score was equal for most of the game and the lead frequently swung from one team to the other, making it an entertaining and exciting match. On the penultimate end Taradale scored a one to lead 15-14. However, the home team were not to be out-done, scoring two close shots on the final end, to win 16-15. The winners were Liffy Law, Susan Belcher, Heather Leyland and Wendy Hicks (Havelock North).

MEN'S OPEN SINGLES
This Men's Singles began in three different greens (Taradale, Napier and Port Ahuriri) before coming together at Napier for Post-Section play. Of the eleven Taradale men who started in this event five made it through to Day 2; Phil Young, Jack Philip, Richard Hocking, Morris Williams and John McLaughlin.

The final was a "Stevenson" affair. Dave Stevenson beat his brother, Mark, in a thrilling finish. Mark had the game all but sewn up before Dave came back from an apparently impossible position to win.

Bowls Taradale supplied both players in the play-off for 3rd position. Jack Philip and Richard Hocking played against each other  - and Jack won that game.

PSYCHOLOGY OR LAW?
A guy asked a girl in a library: "Do you mind if I sit beside you?"

The girl replied with a loud voice: "I DON'T WANT TO SPEND THE NIGHT WITH YOU!"
All the students in the library started staring at the guy, he was embarrassed. After a couple of minutes, the girl walked quietly to the guy's table and said: "I study psychology and I know what a man is thinking, I guess you felt embarrassed, right?
The guy responded with a loud voice: $500 FOR ONE NIGHT? THAT'S TOO MUCH!
All the people in the library looked at the girl in shock. The guy whispered in her ears; "I study Law and I know how to make someone feel guilty."

THE LEAD EVERYBODY WANTS
Unless you are asked by your skip to roll the jack a specified distance, endeavour to send it to a length that suits you – and continue to do so unless asked to change. If your skip gives instructions to roll it a certain length you must try to obey.

You now have the job of getting the bowl as close to the jack as possible. After an end or two you may decide to use just one side of the green, that is, forehand one way and backhand the other because the width and pace of the green will be much the same both ways. If you make that decision don’t change during that game. A lead should become machine-like. When you do it is very satisfying but you cannot maintain consistency if you chop and change from one side to the other.

If a bowl close to the jack looks in the way more often than not you will miss it. If you go inside it you will get shot, if you go around it you could get shot and if you rest it you will have at least a good second shot. And no skip will be unhappy with a good second shot.

There are other players to follow you and it isn’t the end of the world if you don’t get shot, but by staying on the hand you know you will have a better chance of getting a close bowl. There are others in your team. Your job is to get your bowls as close to the jack as possible.

QUESTION: During a competition at a local Bowling Club a bowl from the neighbouring rink was heading for our jack.
The person on our head lifted the jack and let the bowl pass through. She said, “I am allowed to do this.”
Was she right?

Law 33.6  Jack displacement by a bowl from a neighbouring rink
If a jack at rest on the rink is in danger of being moved by a bowl from a neighbouring rink, any player at the head or the marker should stop the bowl. If the bowl was in its original course and was delivered on a bias that would have taken it back into its own rink, it should be replayed.

GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP DILEMMA
You are playing in the club championship tournament finals and the match is halved at the end of 17 holes. You have the honour and hit your ball a modest two hundred thirty metres to the middle of the fairway, leaving a simple six iron to the pin.

Your opponent then hits his ball, lofting it deep into the woods to the right of the fairway.

Being the golfing gentleman that you are, you help your opponent look for his ball.

Just before the permitted five minute search period ends, your opponent says: "Go ahead and hit your second shot and if I don't find it in time, I'll concede the match."

You hit your ball, landing it on the green, stopping about three metres the pin.

About the time your ball comes to rest, you hear your opponent exclaim from deep in the woods: "I found it!".

The second sound you hear is a click, the sound of a club striking a ball and the ball comes sailing out of the woods and lands on the green, stopping no more two metres from the hole.

Now here is the ethical dilemma: Do you pull the cheat's ball out of your pocket and confront him with it or do you keep your mouth shut?
