GARDNER SHIELD
Last Monday we had one win and one close loss (the team that lost had to play an extra end because both teams were drawn after 18 ends).  Bowls Taradale finished 2nd in our Zone so we will not be in the final Zone playoff tomorrow afternoon. It will be Heretaunga v Port Ahuriri and played in Hastings on Wednesday 12th December.

I am so proud of our players. They trained hard, went through a selection process and really did their best. Well done, everyone
The results below are taken from Bowls HB website .

LONG BEACH HOLDUP
When his shotgun failed to fire at its intended victim during a holdup in Long Beach, California, would be robber, James Elliot did something that can only inspire wonder: He peered down the barrel and tried the trigger again.

This time it worked.

MONDAY WOMEN'S TRIPLES INTERCLUB
Two losses at Kia Toa last Monday means our women now share second place with three other clubs. The last game in this competition will be tomorrow at Bowls Taradale. We play Havelock North. Two wins to us against the top club would make a nice Christmas present.

THANK YOU
Every now and again someone volunteers to provide something for our newsletters - photos, writeups, etc.
These offers are always gratefully received and I know from the  feedback I get they are very well received.

Thank you, Colleen Ferrick, for the following article on our young bowlers who are competing in Hamilton at the Secondary Schools Championships.

NATIONAL SECONDARY SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPS AT HAMILTON
Bowls Taradale has a proud and successful record in promoting Secondary School Bowls since this essential programme began in the year 2000.  Expert fundamental coaching and support by Wilma Ennor and John Hanlen have seen our young talented bowlers progress to an enviable record of four National Secondary School singles championships.  Angela Boyd, NGHS, began the ball rolling by winning the second event in 2001, followed by her sister Mandy, NGHS, (who won in two consecutive years – 2008 and 2009) and then Tessa Hocking (NGHS) in 2010.  Four National Secondary School singles titles for NGHS and Bowls Taradale inside eleven years – remarkable!

This year’s Hawke’s Bay contenders, Richard Hocking, Tianna White (both Bowls Taradale) and Dean Drummond (Kia Toa) all qualified by winning the Central Region singles championships which were held at Bowls Heretaunga last July.    All three have exceptional talent and will be competing in this National competition for the second time.  They will be aspiring for inclusion in Bowls New Zealand’s Coaching Squads with a view to representing New Zealand in the future.

Tianna 15 is a student at Tamatea High School where among other subjects she is studying Travel and Tourism - a Year 12 course.  Besides playing outdoor bowls, Tianna is a skilful indoor bowler and a secondary schools representative in this discipline also.  She undoubtedly displayed her competence, expertise and rapid improvement by winning our Club Junior Singles this season and can often be found playing bowls with her Grandfather, John Toa.

Richard 17 is a Year 12 pupil at Taradale High School.   In his penultimate year at school he has been specialising in English, French, Maths, Media, Chemistry and Biology. He has recently featured prominently in several Club and Centre Open competitions – these successes probably due to his determined, spectacular rise in bowling skills and dedicated practice.  As he has the potential to improve even further, there certainly will be many notable triumphs for him in time to come.

Check out the results of the Secondary Schools Nationals being held at the Hillcrest Bowling Club and the Hamilton Bowling Club, Sun/Mon/Tue 9/10/11th December 2012 by following this link - BNZ Secondary School's Bowls

WEDNESDAY MORNING COACHING IS HAVING A BREAK

The coaching lesson this Wednesday will be the last for a few weeks.
Lessons will recommence in February.
If anyone needs help before then just contact John Calnan or Colleen and John McLaughlin and a time will be arranged for you.

SENIOR CITIZENS
At a nursing home not too far from our bowling green, a group of senior citizens were sitting around talking about their aches and pains.

"My arms are so weak I can hardly lift this cup of coffee," said one.

"I know what you mean. My cataracts are so bad I can't even see my coffee," replied another.

"I can't turn my head because of the arthritis in my neck," said a third, to which several nodded weakly in agreement.

"My blood pressure pills make me dizzy," another contributed.

"I guess that's the price we pay for getting old," winced an old man as he slowly shook his head.

Then there was a short moment of silence. "Well, it's not that bad," said one man cheerfully. "Thank God we can all still drive."

THE SECOND EVERYBODY WANTS
If the lead has done his job the second can be called upon to play position bowls – and they can be the most difficult to play.  If the opposition lead has two on the jack the second may be called upon to play a firm shot to open up the head.

So, the second has to be very versatile or his bowls will be wasted.

  • He has to have a good draw shot,
  • he must have accurate positional play, and
  • he must be the possessor of a good firm shot.

A second must never be short unless otherwise directed. An overdrawn bowl has a better chance of counting than a short bowl. In addition to playing the game the second is responsible for keeping the correct scores on the scoreboard.

Any player that can live up to the above has a very important role to play in any team

POSSESSION OF THE RINK
QUESTION:
I was playing a game of bowls one day when the opposing skip said, “Watch so-and-so, he’s delivering his bowl before the other person’s bowl has stopped.”  When does possession of the rink transfer to the other team?

Law 35        Possession of the Rink

Possession of the rink will belong to the player or team whose bowl is being played. As soon as each bowl comes to rest, possession of the rink will transfer to the opposing player or team after allowing time for marking a toucher as soon as it comes to rest.

ETIQUETTE

Walk quickly when changing ends
and walk within the confines of the rink
you are playing on.

NEW SEATS

Someone told me they were sturdy, good looking and would last for years ...
but I am not sure what were they referring to?

We wish Tessa well

Attention all Juniors and Club Officials,

The Milford 5000 Junior Bowls Tournament is being held on the 9th and 10th of February 2013 at the Milford Bowling Club and the tournament is filling fast. If you have not yet put in a team, it is important you get your entry form in as soon as possible as entries are restricted to the first 32 teams that have forwarded their entry form and entry fee.

This is the richest junior tournament in New Zealand with just on $6,000 in Prize Money ($2,000 to the winning team) and it is an ideal opportunity for all juniors to bench mark themselves against their peers.

Key things to note:

  • entries are now open and are restricted to the first 32 teams that have forwarded their entry and entry fee.
  • all teams must consist of players from the same club (any combination).
  • you are not initially required to name your players, but it is very important that you register and get your forms in.

We expect to have Kerry Clark, CEO Bowls NZ, to be in attendance (as he has done for the last two years) as well as a number of other high profile bowling personalities and selectors.

Please find the poster and entry form attached. This information will also be on the Milford Bowling Club website (www.bowlsmilford.co.nz), just click on the Milford 5000 tab along the top.

Any queries should be directed to Graham Dorreen at graham@grdmarketing.co.nz or Tim Preston at timpxtra@gmail.com.

SOMEONE'S UNDER THE BED
Joe went to a psychiatrist. "Doc," he said, "I've got trouble. Every time I get into bed, I think there's somebody under it. I get under the bed, I think there's somebody on top of it. Top, under, top, under. You gotta help me, I'm going crazy!"

"Let me take care of it," said the shrink. "Come to me three times a week, and I'll cure your fears."

"How much do you charge?"

"A hundred dollars per visit."

"I'll sleep on it," said Joe.

Six months later the doctor met Joe on the street. "Why didn't you ever come to see me again?" asked the psychiatrist.

"For a hundred bucks a visit? A bartender cured me for ten dollars."

"Is that so! How?"

"He told me to cut the legs off the bed!"
