MEN'S OPEN TRIPLES
Bowls Taradale was well represented in the Open Triples with eight teams entered. By Post-Section play that number had been whittled down to two. Firstly there were the "young guns" comprising Dave Henderson, Bryan Godber and Lloyd Fitness - while the other team consisted of Phil Young, Frank Grantham and Ewen McLauchlan. Unfortunately neither team made the final but if the play that I witnessed was anything to go by all six bowlers can be very proud of their achievements.

The final was between Graham Fulford, Steve Oliver, Greg Hodges and Tony Terry, Mike Isaacson and Pat O'Neil - Graham's Havelock North team won

WOMEN'S OPEN TRIPLES
(by Colleen Ferrick)
Among the eleven teams that qualified for post-section play at Bowls Napier today, was only one Bowls Taradale combination – Angela Boyd, Sheryl Glock and Barbara Exeter. They began strongly by defeating Liffy Law, Sue Belcher and Heather Leyland, Havelock North (part of last week’s winning Open Fours combination) by two points, and then went on to play Mere Nepia, Natarsha Grimshaw and Di Bentley (Bay View). Several ‘kills’ by the Bay View trio made the score even on the final end (17/17). On the extra end, Taradale held the winning shot until the penultimate bowl, when Mere moved the Jack to her teammate’s waiting bowl.

Three Bay View teams competed in the semi-finals (Louise Bateman, Beryl Skidmore, Jo Hayes, and Bev Withers, Judy Richards, Jude Bernstone (plus Mere Nepia’s team) along with Robyn Wallace, Dot Palmer and Ngaire McKinlay (Omarunui). B Withers defeated L Bateman and R Wallace defeated M. Nepia

Final result….. All tied (16/16) on the last end. Robyn Wallace's team won on an extra end 18/16.

INFORMATION TO MAKE YOU THINK
The statistics on sanity tell us that one out of every four persons is suffering from some sort of mental illness.
Now, think of your three best bowling friends -- and if they are okay, then it must be you!!  Scary eh?

GARDNER SHIELD FINAL
Port Ahuriri (Napier Zone) and Heretaunga (Hastings Zone) played the final of this year's Gardner Shield last Wednesday.
The winner was Heretaunga.

THIS IS WHAT BOWLS NZ SAID ABOUT RICHARD - after Day 2
Unbeaten Napier Bowler Set to Start Family Tradition

Unbeaten in the Boys Singles, Richard Hocking (Taradale High School) is on a roll. Two days of superb youth bowls action, hot enough to match the Waikato weather, have been played at the Bowls NZ National Secondary Schools Championships and the semifinalists have now been decided at Hillcrest Bowling Club and Hamilton City Club – among them is Taradale High School student Richard Hocking, who has maintained an untarnished record so far in the boys single.

Unbeaten after two days of action-packed matches against the best in the country, Richard Hocking (Taradale High School) has a chance to follow in his sister Tessa's footsteps and win the singles title this year. Of course a semi-final and final match stand between him and another Hocking family title in the prestigious competition.

Among the elite teen-aged bowlers that went down to Hocking was Sheldon Bagrie-Howley (Gore High School), Kittyhawks National U20 Singles winner in 2011 and last year's runner-up at this event in the singles. The Southlander was tumbled 14-20 in the first round of play yesterday morning.
NATIONAL SECONDARY SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPS IN HAMILTON
Didn't Richard Hocking do well? On the first two days in Hamilton he won all his games (10 from 10) and must surely have been the favourite to win the title. Unfortunately Richard missed out in the semifinal going under by a very narrow margin (15-13). He more than made up in his last game for 3rd place winning 21-0  wow!!!

Our other Bowls Taradale entrant was Tianna White. Tianna finished in 6th place. These two players can feel very proud of their achievements - that makes them 3rd best and 6th best in the whole of NZ. A remarkable effort for each bowler. Your club is very proud of you and congratulates you on these outstanding results.
Dean Drummond finished 8th.

Under 18 National Squad
A national squad of 22 has been named who will attend a camp in Auckland in December.
This squad will then be narrowed down to a national team which will compete at the Under 18 Trans Tasman next year.
Congratulations to Richard Hocking (and Dean Drummond) for gaining selection to this squad.

MONDAY WOMEN'S TRIPLES INTERCLUB
The Monday's Ladies Triples would like to give a big thank you to Les Dunnett and his helpers for having the rinks in tip top order, for moving the tables and making the area outside the club house appear so inviting. Thanks to Shirley for arranging the raffle and Joy and Adrienne for their help in the kitchen.

Our teams did well over the seven weeks of this event and were up there with the best during the first half of the tournament. Games throughout the latter half did not go our way although most results were close. Well done to all who gave up their time and represented Bowls Taradale (Sherrill, June, Cheryl, Colleen, Del and Olive)
Havelock North won the competition with Bay View runner-up.

  HORSES ARE CLEVER
A preacher trained his horse to go when he said "Praise the Lord" and to stop when he said "Amen".
The preacher mounted the horse, said "Praise the Lord" and off he went for a ride.
When he said "Amen" they stopped for lunch.
They took off again when he said "Praise the Lord".

The horse started going towards the edge of a cliff.
The preacher got excited and yelled out "Whoa!" then he quickly remembered and said "Amen"...so the horse stopped at the edge.
The preacher was so relieved he looked up to heaven and said "Praise the Lord" ... oops!

THE SKIP EVERYBODY WANTS
To make a success of skipping players must have a lot of confidence in their own ability. They must be top-notch draw bowlers because more often than not this is the shot they have to play. If their draw shot is not their best and most consistent shot they should not be skipping. They must be capable of good trail shots, firm shots to rest bowls or push them through and must also be accurate drivers. The skip should only drive when they can afford to do so. Every shot must have a definite objective and if there is a danger that one’s own bowls will be lost then the shot should not be played.

The skip must try to get the very best out of the side. Stressing the obvious such as too narrow, too wide or too fast will not give the poor player who has played the bad shot any confidence. Skips must overlook poor shots and let the players know they believe in them and know they will do better. Harmony in a side is just as important as the bowls that are played.

Skips have to realise that every player in the side is doing their best. If they give the impression, by word or action, that they have lost confidence in the team then it is skip’s fault when the standard of play quickly deteriorates.

WHERE SHOULD EACH PLAYER STAND
Is there a set place where each member of a team should stand during a game?

Law 36.1       Position of Players in relation to rink of play
Players at the mat-end of the rink who are not delivering a bowl should stand at least 1 metre behind the mat.

Players at the head-end of the rink and who are not controlling play should stand:

·         behind the jack if they are members of the team which is in possession of the rink;

·         behind the jack and away from the head if they are members of the team which is not in possession of the rink;

·         on the surrounds of the green if the jack is in the ditch; or

·         well clear of the head if it is not possible to stand on the surrounds.

If at any time you feel like sitting down DO NOT sit on the bank as this is the official playing field.

CELL PHONES
After a very busy, tiring day at the office, the young woman settled down in her seat and closed her eyes while the train departed.

As the train rolled out of the station, the guy standing nearby in the aisle pulled out his cell phone and started talking in a loud voice:

“Hi sweetheart, it’s Eric, I’m on the train – yes, I know it’s the six thirty and not the four thirty, but I had a long meeting – no, honey, not with that floozy from the accounts office, with the boss. No sweetheart, you’re the only one in my life – yes, I’m sure, cross my heart,” etc., etc.

Fifteen minutes later, he was still talking loudly, when the woman sitting next to him, who was obviously annoyed by his continuous loud blabbing, yelled ”Hey, Eric, turn that stupid phone off, and come back to bed!”

Eric doesn’t use his cell phone in public any longer.
