MEN'S INTERCLUB 7s AND
3s
This men's interclub event was played out yesterday
and today at four different venues; Napier,
Port Ahuriri, Taradale, Wairere and Heretaunga.
It's late Sunday
afternoon as I write this and I have heard no results
of the weekend's matches. All I can comment on is the
group that I played with at Bowls Napier (Division One
7's). We had two glorious days of bowling despite the
heat. I played in the fours. The five opposing clubs
all provided stiff opposition and were pleasant to
play against. We all bowled well, we won more games
than we lost and I enjoyed playing with the other
three (Frank G, Jack P, Morris W). Richard Hocking
(singles) and Phil Young / Ewen McLauchlan
(pairs) were competitive and helped keep Taradale in
contention right through to the very end. Eventually
Taradale just went under to Bowls Napier. Unofficially
Taradale won about 11 or 12 of the 15 games played. |
|
WOMEN'S OPEN SINGLES
We had SEVEN women entered in the women's open singles
this year - well done to all of you. I bet you
didn't expect it to be so hot!!
Games on the first day were played at Kia Toa and Havelock North. Post Section play
today was
at Havelock North.
Unofficially - three Bowls
Taradale women qualified for Day Two - Barbara Exeter,
Colleen Ferrick and Angela Boyd
As I write - Angela Boyd is playing Natasha Grimshaw
in the final
Footnote: Natasha won
21-20

DAD,
CAN I USE THE CAR?
A teenage boy had just passed his driving test and
inquired of his father as to when they could discuss
his use of the car.
His father said he'd make a deal with his son, "You
bring your grades up from a C to a B average, study
your Bible a little, and get your hair cut. Then we'll
talk about the car."
The boy thought about that for a moment, decided he'd
settle for the offer and they agreed on it.
After about six weeks his father said, "Son, you've
brought your grades up and I know you have
been studying your Bible, but I'm disappointed you
haven't had your hair cut."
The boy said, "You know, Dad, I've been thinking about
that, and I've noticed in my studies of the Bible that
Samson had long hair, John the Baptist had long hair,
Moses had long hair, and there's even strong evidence
that Jesus had long hair."
Dad's reply left him struggling for an answer; "Did
you also notice they all walked everywhere they went? |

GOAL SETTING
Any athlete
without specific performance goals, training goals and
practice goals might be going somewhere but is probably
going nowhere. Aim at nothing and that is mostly what
you get.
Here is an example you might like to try.
5 Ends 20 bowls
8 Short – Mat on minimum mark & jack on T
8 Medium – Mat half way between minimum mark and the T
and jack on T
4 Long – Mat on the T and jack on T
Play 2 F/H then 2 B/H
A pass in this discipline is 50%
Q. What are steroids
A. Things for keeping carpets still on the stair
Q.. What happens to your body as you age
A.. When you get old, so do your bowels and you get
intercontinental |

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE LEAD
What are the responsibilities of “leads” in a game of bowls?
Law 37 The Lead
The lead of the team to play first in an end should: place the mat
and deliver the jack and make sure that it is centred
before delivering the first bowl of the end.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE SECOND PLAYER (OR THIRD)
What are the responsibilities of “thirds” in a game of fours (or
seconds in a game of triples)?
Law 37 The Third
The third can measure any and all disputed shots.
The third can tell the skip the number of shots scored for or
against their team as each end is completed.
ETIQUETTE
RESPECT THE OPPOSITION
People play bowls for enjoyment. It will be more
satisfying if you are mindful of your opponents. Be
ready. Always be on time for the start of play and for
the start of each game. Start and finish a game with a
handshake.

50th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
Bev and Les Stuart
Congratulations
from all your bowling mates
on this outstanding achievement |

|
|
Many thanks for your
congats.
Yes, we made it!!!
50 years!!
It just seems like yesterday, but a lot of water has
flowed under the bridge of happiness.
We met in Timaru where Beverley was starting her big
OE, however, the thoughts of this came to an abrupt
end when:
On the 12 January 1963 Beverley consented in front of
her friends, family and mine, at Whakatane, to become
Mrs B J Stuart.
That was good 'cos I didn't want to change mine to
(Bolt).
Our work over the years has meant that we were
transferred at times around the country,
choosing to retire to the warmth and life style found
in Napier.
We are proud parents of two children, (almost as old
as us, well, perhaps, some years behind)
Our son has his own business in Australia and our
daughter a paramedic for St Johns.
Now looking forward to our 60th. |

THOUGHTS TO PONDER
Good health is merely the slowest possible rate at
which one can die.
Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day.
Teach a person to use the Internet and they won't
bother you for weeks, months, maybe years.
All of us could take a lesson from the weather.
It pays no attention to criticism.
Don't worry about old age -- it doesn't last that
long. |

JOHN CALNAN
WROTE
Here are some photos I took of the new artificial
covered bowling greens at Mooloolaba.
The scoreboards are
electronic and I believe the whole complex cost about
$2,000,000.00. Pity we can’t have this here!
Well, we now can!!!
John has generously agreed to donate this week's winnings of
"Big Wednesday" to putting an all-weather cover over Bowls
Taradale greens.
When completed it will be known as THE CALNAN COMPLEX (or John's Joint)

UNWELCOME
CHRISTMAS GIFT
John received a parrot as an early Christmas gift. The
parrot had a really bad attitude and an even worse
vocabulary. Every word out of the bird's mouth was rude,
obnoxious and laced with profanity.
John tried and tried to change the bird's attitude by
consistently saying only polite words, playing soft music
and anything else he could think of to 'clean up' the bird's
vocabulary. Finally, John was fed up and he yelled at the
parrot. The parrot yelled back.
John
shook the parrot and the parrot got angrier and even ruder.
John, in desperation, threw up his hands, grabbed the bird
and shoved him into the freezer.
For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked and
screamed. Then suddenly.... there was total quiet. Not a
peep was heard for over a minute.
Fearing that he'd hurt the parrot, John quickly opened the
door of the freezer.
The parrot calmly stepped out onto John's outstretched arms
and said 'I believe I may have offended you with my rude
language and actions. I'm sincerely remorseful for my
inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend to do
everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivable
behaviour.'
John was stunned at the change in the bird's attitude. As he
was about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic
change in his behaviour, the bird continued............"May
one enquire as to what the turkey did?' |
