BACK TO BASICS
At the end of the day it is all about skills. The team or the player who has more skills than their opposition will mostly win. Bowlers need to become more aware of the importance of being able to perform the basics to a very high standard. It is all about the basics, knowing them and executing them. Only by revisiting them again and again in training sessions will the bowler truly establish the foundations for consistency of performance whereby their true potential in the sport can be achieved. There is no magic formula nor is there a quick fix. It takes a bucket full of self-discipline, commitment, passion and determination to be a highly successful bowler. Without these qualities the true potential of any bowler will seldom reach fruition and they will be left to wonder why. Good enough but not good enough.

WHAT DO YOU WANT?
WHY DO YOU WANT IT?
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO GET IT?
WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO START?

COACHING FROM THE SIDELINE
During a game of bowls one team had a coach who was giving advice from the sideline. Is your coach allowed to make suggestions during a game?

LAW 57 The Manager or Coach
Either the manager or the coach of a player, team or side or, in their absence, the manager’s delegated deputy, can give advice to a player during the course of play as long as:

·         the umpire is given the names of the manager, the coach or the manager’s delegated deputy as appropriate before the game starts;

·         only one person gives advice at any one time; and

·         the person giving the advice does so from outside the boundaries of the green.

Les, Robin and Alan - all made Post Section play (Colts Singles)

Alan and Les in the Championship Colts Singles Final
MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP COLTS SINGLES
Eight "new bowlers" fronted for the colts singles - but no one watching would have guessed they were new bowlers. Ideal conditions, great bowling and a few upsets (how often does that happen) marked Day 1 of the Men's Championship Colts Singles on Saturday. Three people only scored three wins to make Day 2 - Les Dunnett, Robin Packe and Alan Mettrick. In the first game Les beat Robin (Alan had a bye). The final then took place between Les and Alan and what a game it was. Les jumped away to an early lead before Alan caught him up. They remained neck and neck for quite some time then Alan edged ahead and eventually won (I think it finished up 21-18). The many spectators enjoyed a great contest. Congratulations, Alan, on your first Championship title. It was well deserved.

SCHOOL - 1950s vs. 2013
Scenario: Johnny and Mark get into a fight after school.
1950s - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up best friends.
2012 - Police called and they arrest Johnny and Mark, charge them with assault and both are expelled even though Johnny started it. Both children go to anger management programmes for three months. School governors hold meeting to implement bullying prevention programmes.

Scenario:  Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.
1950s - Mark gets glass of water from Principal to take aspirin with, passes exams and becomes a solicitor.
2012 - Police called, car searched for drugs and weapons. Mark expelled from school for drug taking. Ends up as a drop out.

HAWKES BAY MEN'S OPEN PAIRS
While the club Colts Singles was in progress today on one green the semifinal and final of the HB Men's Open Pairs was also taking part on the other green. Richard Hocking, playing with Dean Drummond, was Bowls Taradale's sole representative. The sheet below shows them winning one of the semifinals 17-7 against the Bay View pairing of Barry Wakely and Graeme Gaut. The final was between Richard & Dean and Dave & Mark Stevenson. The game could be summed up in one word - consistency. Richard and Dean played steady consistent bowling and came out the Championship winners by a healthy margin. Congratulations once again to Richard and Dean. Both have talent but both practise and train hard to maximise that talent. This is the result of all that hard work.

BUYING A BRA
A man walked into the ladies department and shyly walked up to the woman behind the counter and said, 'I'd like to buy a bra for my wife.. '

'What type of bra?' asked the clerk.

'Type?' inquires the man, 'There's more than one type?'

' Look around,' said the saleslady, as she showed a sea of bras in every shape, size, colour and material imaginable. Actually, even with all of this variety, there are really only four types of bras to choose from .'

Relieved, the man asked about the types.

The saleslady replied: 'There are the Catholic, Salvation Army, Presbyterian, and the Baptist types. Which one would you prefer?'

Now totally befuddled, the man asked about the differences between them.

The Saleslady responded, 'It is all really quite simple.'

The Catholic type supports the masses;
The Salvation Army type lifts the fallen;
The Presbyterian type keeps them staunch and upright;
The Baptist type makes mountains out of molehills....
