Basil has been a keen supporter of our bowling club for many years and has given us evidence of that on many occasions, usually with "product", for which we are very grateful. Talking to him earlier this week he intends to continue that support and plans to back that with another tournament later in the season. So thank you Basil and your company. We are very aware of your ongoing support and who knows we may see you back on the green again.

Newsletter No 8 - October 16th 2011

The weekend just gone was a busy one. Interclub events got under way with some players, men and women, travelling to Waipukurau before having to rush back and play Championship events in the afternoon. Both the Women's and Men's Championship Pairs are progressing well while the Men's Singles, which started a week ago, is getting closer to a conclusion.

HIGHER THAN KINGS
A Sunday school teacher said to her children,
'We have been learning how powerful kings and queens were in Bible times.
But, there is a Higher Power. Can anybody tell me what it is?'
One child blurted out, 'Aces!'

LEX, REX, JOHNNY - WIN TARADALE RSA ELIMINATION ROUND
Last Monday a team from Bowls Taradale (Lex Parsons, Johnny Ward, Rex Dunne) won the Taradale RSA elimination round at Omarunui by winning their three games. This win gives Lex, Johnny and Rex the right to represent the Taradale RSA at the New Zealand RSA Finals held in Matamata in March of 2012. Congratulations and good luck in the finals.

MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES DOWN TO THE LAST THREE
Play continued in this event on Saturday afternoon. You might recall from last week the original 43 entries had been whittled down to eight. Frank Grantham and Morris Williams had two lives. One-lifers included Bruce Ferrick, Jack Halka, Ray Falvey, Rolly Hoare, John McLaughlin and Richard Hocking.

Frank met Morris in the first round and Frank won, Jack beat Bruce, Ray beat Rolly and Richard beat John. By the close of the day only three bowlers were left. Frank has two lives while Jack and Morris each have one life. This event will continue at some future date.

WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP PAIRS
Saturday afternoon saw the start of the Women's Championship Pairs with 12 teams entered. After a day and a half bowling four teams were still alive. There was only one team with two lives (Colleen McLaughlin / Del Girven) while three others have one life. The one-lifers include Marie Fenton / Cheryl Simpson, Sheryl Glock / Barbara Exeter, Sue Brock / Maree Turner.

MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP PAIRS
Twenty nine men's teams entered the Championship Pairs. Although the Match Committee is new they relished the challenges the large number of entries brought and they are to be congratulated on doing such a fine job. By the close of play today four teams had two lives - John Calnan / Don Neilson, Bruce Ferrick / Alan Ferrick, Barry Gardner / Geoff Taylor, Jack Philip / Robin Oates. Eleven other teams still have one life. This competition will continue on November 6th.

ETIQUETTE TIP

BE A GOOD NEIGHBOUR

If you are on the mat waiting to bowl ...
check to see if anyone is about to deliver a bowl on the adjacent rinks.

A good friend can tell you what is the matter with you in a minute.

He may not seem such a good friend after telling.

COACHING TIP

BUILDING A HEAD
Building a head is all about
(a) adding to the count
(b) protecting the shot and
(c) retrieving the situation when down

Points to bear in mind
·
       Play the easiest side
·
Always aim to get both 1st and 2nd shot
·
When you are holding two shots – protect the head (i.e. anticipate opponent’s shots)
·
If you are not sure what shot to play - draw
·
When playing a yard-on do not lose the bowl if unsuccessful
·
Be up when you are down
·
Two down is bad – but not as bad as four down!!!

When holding shot stay wide
When not holding shot keep narrow
Keep the mat the same length when winning – change length if losing
If getting well beaten consider staying on same side as opponent. It gets in their way and you could get 2nd shot

THANK YOU ADRIAN

The Match Committee would like to thank Adrian Barker for repairing the bowls computer, providing a screen, keyboard and mouse for us. If anyone is having trouble with their computer then Adrian is available to repair and overhaul your computer for you.

Many years ago in Scotland , a new game was invented.
It was ruled 'Gentlemen Only.....Ladies Forbidden'... ...
And thus, the word GOLF entered into the English language.

FLAT TYRE
There were four teenagers who played truant one morning. Upon coming to class in the afternoon, they reported that their lateness was because their car got a flat tyre.

"That’s fine", the teacher said much to the students relief, "but there was a written test this morning which you boys have to make up, so please have a seat and take out a piece of paper."

“Now for the first question, which tyre was flat?”

Don’t take yourself so seriously.
No one else does.

LAWS TIP

LOOKING AT THE HEAD IN A GAME OF SINGLES
With so many men playing singles last weekend some players may have been tempted to go up and have a look at the head while the end was still in progress. Do you know what the law says regarding this?

A.4 Restricting the movement of players during play
(slightly abbreviated)
If a Controlling Body decides that it is appropriate to restrict the movement of players during play, provision for this should be included within the Conditions of Play in line with the following.
After delivering their first bowl, players will only be allowed to walk up to the head under the following circumstances.
Singles game - after delivery of their third and fourth bowls.

In exceptional and limited circumstances, a Singles player can ask the marker for permission to walk up to the head.

Q. What do bulletproof vests, fire escapes, windshield wipers and laser printers have in common?
A. All were invented by women.

PIPER PLAYS AT PAUPER'S GRAVESIDE
As a piper, I give many performances. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a paupers' cemetery in the back country.

As I was not familiar with the area, I got lost. And, being a typical man, I didn't stop for directions. I finally arrived an hour late and saw that the funeral guy had evidently gone, as the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch.

I felt badly and apologised to the men for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn't know what else to do, so I started to play.

The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played like I've never played before for this homeless man.

And as I played Amazing Grace, the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together. When I finished, I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head hung low, my heart was full.

As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, "I never seen anything like that before .....  and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years."
